Canon Cinema EOS-1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

Canon Cinema EOS1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

At $11,999, this latest Canon 1D is hardly set to become a DSLR bestseller, but there are certainly a few pro shooters willing to line up for an incredibly versatile 18-megapixel 4K cam, with EOS lens compatibility and a full-frame sensor. We were expecting Canon's top-of-the-line beast to sell for just shy of $15,000, so this new sub-$12k sticker is a pleasant surprise. You'll also need to invest in a battery of high-speed (at least 100MB/s) CF cards -- the 1D C captures 4096 x 2160 video at 24 frames per second with an approximate file size of 3.76 gigs per minute of footage, according to the camera's instruction manual, which you'll find, along with a purchase link, at the source link below. The EOS-1D C is expected to hit stores in the US later this week, but a few lucky shooters have been out and about capturing demo reels for the last few weeks -- you'll find some of that footage after the break, along with a few more clips at the coverage links below.

Unclogging Drains, Gift Cards, and Panoramic PhotosReaders offer their best tips for unclogging drains without the help of chemicals, getting the gunk off your gift cards, and taking panoramic photos on your smartphone.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Use a Shop Vac to Unclog a Drain Without Chemicals

Adam Elbaum shares an alternative method for unclogging a stubborn drain:

Supposedly all those chemicals (like Drano) are bad for your pipes, but more importantly they're expensive. A much better way to unclog your drains is to use a shop vac. Simply remove the stopper (or metal grate if it's the shower) and put the shop vac hose in or around the opening. Let it run for 5 minutes and the drain will run good as new when you're finished.

It may seem like you don't have a very good seal, but a good seal isn't necessary and may actually be counter-productive. You don't want to create a perfect vacuum seal because it may try to suck water out of the sewer at that point. When I do my shower I'm able to thread the hose down the drain a little, with my sink I just hold it directly over the drain. Just make sure you use a shop vac not a regular vacuum because it may pull a little water and you don't want to damage your vacuum.

Easily Clean Up Silver Dust from Scratch-Off Gift Cards

Emax41 figures out a better way to avoid gift card gunk:

Got a gift card? Hate cleaning up the scratch-off reside on Amazon Gift Cards and others?

First, take the gummy, booger-like material off. After scratching the silver material off of the other code, you'll find it leaves behind fine silver dust, similar to a lottery scratch-off ticket. I was able to run the gummy material over it and on the residue that went on the table and got the majority of it off!

Take Vertical Panoramic Shots with Your Smartphone

Audiopocalypse notes that the iPhone's panorama mode can work in any orientation:

Obvious but not: you can utilize Panoramic photo taking apps vertically. If you are trying to take a picture of something tall, just hold the phone sideways and rotate upwards.

Use GitHub (and Similar Tools) to Track Household Repairs

Fred finds another way to keep track of his household projects:

I read this trick on Hacker News where a guy used GitHub's Issue Tracker to track household repairs like the thermostat not working or a broken ceiling light. That way he can keep track of what has and hasn't been done, tag things, and other people can even comment on it. It seems a little silly (and you could always just use a regular to-do app), but I'm sure people could find some clever uses for it.

You can see the original example here, though the commenters over at Hacker News have some other cool ideas about how you could track these things.

Police probe motive in deadly Pennsylvania shooting spree

(Reuters) - Investigators are searching for a possible motive in a shooting spree that left four people dead in rural Pennsylvania, including two apparent neighbors of the gunman, state police said on Saturday.

The violence erupted on Friday when a man with a pistol fatally shot three people in Frankstown Township, about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, before he was killed in a shootout with state troopers as he tried to flee in a pickup truck, authorities said.

Officials identified the gunman as Jeffrey Lee Michael, 44.

Pennsylvania State Police spokesman David McGarvey said two of the three people the gunman killed appeared to be neighbors, but gave few further details.

He said investigators "aren't aware of any dispute" between Michael and the victims, who were identified as Kimberly Scott, 58, Kenneth Lynn, 60, and William Rhodes Jr., 38.

The violence in Pennsylvania unfolded as bells tolled and many Americans observed a moment of silence for the 20 children and six adults shot to death a week earlier by a gunman at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

The Newtown shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also shot his mother to death at their home before going on his rampage, which ended with his suicide and has reignited a national debate over gun control.

In the Pennsylvania incident, the gunman in fairly rapid succession shot and killed a woman inside a church, then fatally shot two men at their respective homes - all within a short distance from each other - before trying to flee.

He opened fire at two state police patrol cars rushing to the scene as he passed them on a two-lane road and slammed head-on into a third patrol car. The gunman was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police at the crash scene, police said.

All three troopers involved in the chase were injured - one from the collision, another from bullet fragments and shattered glass, and a third who was shot in the chest but survived thanks to a bullet-proof vest. They were treated and released from a local hospital, McGarvey said.

Police have said that it did not appear that the shooting had any connection to the massacre in Connecticut.

Kerry a familiar face on the world stage

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sen. John Kerry, President Barack Obama's pick for secretary of state, is a familiar face to the world leaders vital to American interests.

The son of a diplomat and Obama's unofficial envoy, Kerry spent hours walking around the palace in Kabul persuading Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to agree to a runoff election in fall 2009. The relationship will be crucial in the coming months as the administration draws down U.S. forces after more than a decade of war.

In Pakistan, Kerry helped quell the anger after the U.S. incursion into the country to kill Osama bin Laden in May 2011. The uneasy ties between Washington and Islamabad will be a priority for Kerry at the State Department.

"He knows most of the world leaders," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. "So when he goes into a country he will be a known quantity."

The five-term Massachusetts senator has spent his entire congressional career on the Foreign Relations Committee, the last six as chairman. He has traveled extensively both as intrepid lawmaker and administration emissary.

Fulfilling a Kerry dream, Obama on Friday tapped the 69-year-old lawmaker, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, to replace Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for the top job at Foggy Bottom.

"I think it's fair to say that few individuals know as many presidents and prime ministers, or grasp our foreign policies as firmly as John Kerry," Obama said in making the announcement. "And this makes him a perfect choice to guide American diplomacy in the years ahead."

Kerry is expected to sail to confirmation, with both Republicans and Democrats praising the nomination. His friend, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., jokingly referred to him as "Mr. Secretary" earlier this month, a remarkable turn as just eight years ago Republicans ridiculed Kerry as a wind-surfing, elitist flip-flopper in his bid for the White House.

While Kerry has tamped down diplomatic fires for Obama, he has stepped ahead of the administration on a handful of crises. He joined McCain as an early proponent of a more aggressive policy toward Libya, pushing for using military forces to impose a "no-fly zone" over Libya as Moammar Gadhafi's forces killed rebels and citizens.

He was one of the early voices calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down as the revolution roiled the nation last year.

That independent voice may be tempered once he takes over as the administration's top diplomat.

"He's going to find what it's like to be part of an administration," said Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C. "John's going to adapt to this well. I think he spent a lot of his time grooming to be a good secretary of state. ... I don't see any downside to this nomination."

During his tenure, Kerry has pushed for reducing the number of nuclear weapons, shepherding a U.S.-Russia treaty through the Senate in December 2010, and has cast climate change as a national security threat, joining forces with Republicans on legislation that faced too many obstacles to win congressional passage.

He has led delegations to Syria and met a few times with President Bashar Assad, now a pariah in U.S. eyes after months of civil war and bloodshed as the government looks to put down a people's rebellion. Figuring out an end-game for the Middle East country would demand all of Kerry's skills.

The selection of Kerry closes a political circle with Obama. In 2004, it was White House hopeful Kerry who asked a largely unknown Illinois state senator to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, handing the national stage to Obama. Kerry lost that election to President George W. Bush. Four years later, Obama was the White House hopeful who succeeded where Kerry had failed.

Throughout this past election year, Kerry skewered Obama's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, at nearly every opportunity and was a vocal booster for the president's re-election. Kerry memorably told delegates at the Democratic National Convention in August: "Ask Osama bin Laden if he's better off now than he was four years ago."

Kerry and McCain, defeated presidential candidates who returned to the Senate, have joined forces repeatedly during the past few decades. In July 1995, the two decorated Vietnam War veterans provided political cover to President Bill Clinton when he normalized U.S. relations with Vietnam. Clinton had been dogged by questions about his lack of military service.

Kerry, the Yale graduate who enlisted in the Navy, was an appealing presidential nominee in 2004 for his Vietnam War service. Three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, national security credentials were critical against Bush.

But Kerry was pounded by the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, a group that made unsubstantiated claims challenging Kerry's war record of a Silver Star, a Bronze Star for combat valor and three Purple Hearts. His candidacy also was dogged by his anti-war stance in April 1971 when he testified before the committee he would later chair and famously asked, "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"

Kerry's move to the State Department will spark yet another special election in Massachusetts ? the third Senate contest since a 2010 special election following the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 2009.

Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who won the 2010 special election but lost last month to Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, is seen as a front-runner on the GOP side if he chooses to run again.

Possible Democratic candidates include Reps. Michael Capuano, Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch, and Ted Kennedy Jr., son of the late senator. Gov. Deval Patrick must name an interim senator to serve until the special election. Former Gov. Michael Dukakis and Victoria Kennedy, Edward M. Kennedy's widow, have been suggested as possible interim senators although Patrick hasn't publicly confirmed any names.

Kerry was in Pakistan last year in the midst of a diplomatic crisis after Raymond Davis, a CIA-contracted American spy, was accused of killing two Pakistanis.

Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, traveled to Pakistan around that time and recalled Kerry's influence.

"I arrived in Islamabad, I think, five days after Ray Davis had been taken into a jail in the Punjab and was at very real risk of being hauled out of the jail and lynched," Coons said. "Sen. Kerry was about to show up and negotiate on behalf of the administration. And it was clear that both the diplomats and the military folks we met with viewed him as a real man of credibility and experience who was likely to contribute meaningfully to those negotiations."

Davis pleaded self-defense. After weeks of wrangling between the U.S. and Pakistan, he was released in exchange for "blood money" paid to the dead men's relatives.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who likely will take over the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee, said the high-level relationships that Kerry "built with world leaders will allow him to step seamlessly into the position and to ensure that there is no decline in U.S. leadership on important global issues during a transition."

Physicists take photonic topological insulators to the next level

Dec. 21, 2012 ? Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have designed a simulation that for the first time emulates key properties of electronic topological insulators.

Their simulation, which was described this week in Nature Materials, is part of a rapidly moving scientific race to understand and exploit the potential of topological insulators, which are a state of matter that was only discovered in the past decade. These insulators may enable dramatic advances in quantum computing and spintronics.

"The discovery of these materials, which are insulators in their volume while capable of conducting current on their surface, was a bit of a surprise to the condensed matter community," said Gennady Shvets, professor of physics in the College of Natural Sciences. "Before that, we classified solid materials into three categories, based on their ability to conduct electric current: insulators, conductors, and semiconductors. Topological insulators fall somewhere in between."

Shvets co-authored the article with his physics department colleagues Alexander Khanikaev, S. Hossein Mousavi, Wang-Kong Tse, Mehdi Kargarian, and Professor Allan MacDonald.

He said that what's particularly exciting about topological insulators is that they can conduct electrons -- or in the case of photonic ones, photons -- in a way that protects them from scattering or reflecting when they encounter obstacles.

"Usually when photons run into an obstacle, they reflect," said Shvets. "We are basically designing interfaces in such a way that they lock photons into one spin state. So in one direction they're in one spin state, and when they're going in another direction they're locked into another spin state. In that configuration they cannot reflect without changing their spin, which is forbidden by the design of the photonic crystal. They flow around defects and can be routed along arbitrarily shaped paths defined by the interface."

If this property could be achieved with electrons it would be particularly relevant to quantum computers, which are likely to require their electrons to maintain coherence for a much longer time than digital computers.

Over the past decade scientists have had modest success making or finding electronic topological insulators. But these substances are limited both in what they can do and in what they can reveal about the potential of this new state of matter.

"Those systems are very difficult to study systematically, because when you have a real material it is what it is. You're limited to studying its properties," said Shvets. "Nature doesn't give you the knobs to increase or decrease various aspects of it, so it's very difficult to benchmark the existing theories against what's observed."

Shvets and his physics department colleagues expect that their simulated photonic insulator will be a much more powerful and flexible tool for studying the general properties of topological insulators.

"With these purely artificial photonic crystals, we can study these systems in a more systematic way," he said.

In order for their insights from the photonic system to be applicable to electronic systems, Shvets and his colleagues had to make their simulated photons behave sufficiently like electrons. To do that, they designed simulated "metamaterials." These are artificial electromagnetic materials that can be tuned to influence photons in ways that are otherwise impossible. Other metamaterials are being used to develop invisibility cloaks.

Shvets and his colleagues designed what they've called SPINDOMs (spin-degenerate optically-active metamaterials). When arranged periodically, the resulting meta-crystals are the first demonstration that it's possible to control the spin of photons in a way that emulates what can be done with electrons.

This is significant on a few fronts. Even as a computer simulation it allows researchers to explore the properties of topological insulators. When these photonic topological insulators are physically built, as Shvets and his colleagues hope will be done soon, they'll allow more exploration. And there's great promise that such insulators may eventually be used to reduce interference in wireless communications systems.

"Right now if you put multiple emitting or receiving antennas in close proximity to each other, whether on a semiconductor chip or on top of a cellular base station, the radiation from each antenna is affected by the others," he said. "To deal with this you have to design around it. What would be better is if all cross talk between emitting/receiving sources could just be eliminated. That's what we believe could be done by photonic topological insulators, which can directionally guide electromagnetic waves."

(AP) ? Italy's president dissolved parliament Saturday, setting the stage for general elections in February and leaving only one lingering question from Premier Mario Monti's 13-month term trying to fix Italy's troubled finances: whether he will run.

Monti will announce his decision Sunday, ending weeks of speculation and jockeying that have dominated Italy's political discourse and preoccupied much of Europe, which is eager to see Monti's financial reforms continue in the continent's third-largest economy.

With polls showing a Monti-led list would only garner about 15 percent of the vote, all signs indicated he would refrain from campaigning or even allowing his name to be used on a political ticket grouping a handful of small centrist parties.

"Monti leaning towards a 'no'," the Turin daily La Stampa headlined Sunday. "Monti pulls back on running," Corriere della Sera said on its front page.

Whether he might endorse a centrist movement is another matter.

"It's clear that Monti's candidacy would give authority to our political platform, but we'll respect his choices, whatever they may be," said Pier Ferdinando Casini, one of the centrist leaders who have been actively courting Monti in recent weeks.

Monti resigned Friday after ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi's party withdrew its support from his technical government, forcing a crisis that brought a premature and chaotic end to the legislature's five-year term.

Monti was tapped by Italy's president to lead the country in late November 2011 after Berlusconi was forced to resign, having lost the confidence of international markets in his ability to save the country from a Greek-style debt crisis.

The respected economist and former European Union commissioner won back a degree of international credibility for the country through a series of tax hikes and fiscal reforms that were deeply unpopular at home. Italy's borrowing rates have come down significantly, thanks also to the European Central Bank's bond-buying program.

Monti's resignation set in motion a series of procedures that culminated with President Giorgio Napolitano signing a decree Saturday to dissolve parliament.

Polls indicate the center-left Democratic Party will win the vote, with the upstart populist movement of comic Bepe Grillo coming in second and Berlusconi's People of Freedom party coming in third.

Berlusconi's party has been in disarray ever since he resigned, with defections of top party leaders and chaos over whether the billionaire media mogul will run himself. He has flip-flopped several times about his intentions, with his latest that he would run but would step aside if Monti runs.

Berlusconi's party has also been discredited by a series of party funding scandals that have seen dozens of local politicians placed under investigation for allegedly misusing public funds for personal use. He also was convicted of tax fraud in October and is on trial on charges he paid for sex with an underage woman. He has denied the charges and is appealing the conviction. He also recently announced he was dating a woman nearly 50 years his junior.

LANSING, Kan.?

Kansas officials have exhumed the bodies of two men executed for the 1959 slayings of a Kansas family made infamous in Truman Capote's nonfiction novel, ?In Cold Blood.?

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said the bodies of Richard Hickock and Perry Smith were exhumed Tuesday at the Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing at the request of Florida officials.

The Sarasota County sheriff's office asked for the exhumation to collect DNA that could help solve the 1959 murders of Cliff and Christine Walker and their two children in Osprey, Fla.

The Walkers were killed soon after the slayings of Herb Clutter and his family in Holcomb, Kan.

Sarasota officials say Hickock and Smith fled to Florida after the Kansas killings and were in the area when the Walkers were killed.

Travel costly but worth it for small businesses | TribLIVE

Business travel is an often-neglected aspect of small-business life, and most entrepreneurs don?t travel enough.

Nothing beats the power of a face-to-face meeting for closing a deal or maintaining an ongoing client relationship. Business travel can be expensive, especially on a small-business budget, but I?ve got tips to save you money.

1. Travel early in the year. January and February are often a less expensive time to travel with a couple of exceptions.

2. Use alternate airports. Going to Miami, Washington or San Francisco? Check prices to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Baltimore; or San Jose and Oakland, Calif., instead. Lower-cost airlines often run flights from secondary airports, driving prices down on all airlines.

3. Shop prices on the Internet, but also call hotels directly. Often, the lowest rate ? especially at the last minute ? can be obtained by checking with the hotel.

4. Get a credit card that gives you miles, and pay business expenses with that card.

5. Try moderately priced, business-oriented motels. Many hotel chains are specifically aimed at road warriors ? entrepreneurs, salespeople, consultants. These hotels provide a lot of stuff free: Wi-Fi, breakfast, parking, sometimes even free appetizers and drinks in the early evening.

6. Use your own cellphone in the United States. Hotel phones can be costly, even for local calls.

7. Use smartphone apps to connect when you?re outside the United States. You can call or text back home free.

It?s tough to build, maintain and deepen professional relationships from a distance. Travel is the way to build those bridges.

Large Paris march to support gay marriage plan

PARIS (Reuters) - Supporters of same-sex marriage and adoption marched through Paris on Sunday to back the French government's planned reform and counter unexpectedly strong opposition from conservative and religious groups.

Police said about 60,000 demonstrators turned out, fewer than the 100,000 who protested last month against the law due to be passed by mid-2013. Paris's gay mayor Bertrand Delanoe joined the march along with several other left-wing politicians.

Marching along to drumbeats and jazz music, the protesters waved rainbow flags and held up signs saying "liberty, equality, dignity" and "hate is not a family value." One sign announced "wedding gifts for gays will boost the economy."

Among their chants was "Oui, oui, oui" (yes, yes, yes) in support of same-sex marriage, adoption rights for gay couples and access to assisted procreation methods such as artificial insemination.

The Socialist government's bill would legalize gay marriage and adoption, but not assisted procreation. Left-wing deputies plan to add that option to the law, a step President Francois Hollande did not initially support but has now conceded.

One protester carried a sign urging Hollande's government to move faster. "We have the impression the politicians are less ready for this than citizens are," said Elise Cabanes from Paris.

OPPOSITION ENCOURAGED SUPPORTERS

Latest polls show that about 60 percent of the French support the legalization of marriage for homosexuals, but only 46 percent think they should be able to adopt children.

Support for gay adoption has been slipping since opponents, led by France's main religions, launched a campaign attacking the reform with legal, anthropological and psychological arguments rather than citing their religious doctrines.

Arnaud Jacquimin, a Paris civil servant, carried a sign thanking leading opponents of the reform for helping to rally its supporters. "They united us," he said. "There would have been fewer people here today without their opposition."

With passage of the law assured thanks to the left-wing majority in parliament, France will next year become the 12th country to legalize same-sex marriage. It is already allowed in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.

France legalized gender-neutral civil unions in 1999 and almost as many are contracted now as traditional marriages.

But almost all of them are among heterosexuals, making it more a "marriage light" for them than the favored option for gay couples that they were intended to be.

MORE DEMONSTRATIONS

On Saturday, several thousand demonstrators joined marches for same-sex marriage in a dozen provincial cities. A handful of mayors and deputy mayors also rallied in Paris to demand the government withdraw the law.

Groups opposed to gay marriage, several of them close to the Roman Catholic Church, plan another large protest march in Paris on January 13. The government's bill is due to be introduced in parliament on January 29.

The issue of assisted procreation has split the governing Socialist Party, with some leaders urging deputies not to write it into the draft law.

It is divisive because allowing it could lead to pressure from gay men to legalize surrogate motherhood, which is illegal here and has little support in public opinion.

Some French lesbians who desire children now travel to neighboring Belgium or Spain for artificial insemination.

Vodka helps stranded elephants survive in Russia: RIA

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two circus elephants drank vodka to help them survive when their trailer caught fire in freezing Siberia, RIA news agency said.

A quick-thinking handler resorted to the traditional Russian cure for all ills by buying two cases of vodka from a nearby village, diluting it with warm water and serving it to Indian elephants Jenny and Magda, it said.

He had become desperate after realizing that making them run round the broken truck was not enough to prevent them freezing to death before a new trailer arrived to complete their journey. RIA quoted a local official as saying the vodka had helped them survive.

"After that they roared as if they were in the jungle! Apparently they were happy," he said.

Jenny and Magda, touring the region with a Polish circus, were then taken to a local school gym with little more than frostbite on their ears and trunks.

They reached their final destination in the Siberian city of Omsk on Friday and began rehearsing for circus performances over Christmas and the New Year.

More than 200 genes identified for Crohn's Disease

Friday, December 14, 2012

More than two hundred gene locations have now been identified for the chronic bowel condition Crohn's Disease, in a study that analysed the entire human genome.

Published today in The American Journal of Human Genetics, scientists at UCL have devised a new method for identifying and mapping gene locations for complex inherited diseases. Using this method, they have been able to identify a large number of additional genes for Crohn's Disease, making a total of more than 200, which is more than have been found for any other disease. For example, there are just 66 known gene-regions for type 2 diabetes.

Crohn's Disease, a type of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, is a chronic illness of complex origins affecting approximately 100 to 150 people per 100,000. Understanding the genetic component of such complex diseases is central to explaining patients' symptoms and improving treatment.

Despite Crohn's having a large genetic component, this has been hard to dissect. This is partly due to the large number of genes involved, their complex interactions with environment and the spectrum of clinical presentations. As a result, many scientists have been focusing on ever larger cohorts of patients under the impression that larger data sets data will give better results.

This study shows how studying smaller but better defined groups can lead to a better understanding of how complex diseases are inherited, and paving the way for personalised treatment.

Dr Nikolas Maniatis, senior author from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, said: "The discovery of so many gene locations for Crohn's Disease is an important step forward in understanding the disease, which has a very complicated genetic basis. We hope that the method we have used here can be used to identify the genes involved in other diseases which are similarly complex, for example different cancers and diabetes."

The research team used UK data provided by the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC), which includes genetic information of 1698 CD patients. The team's results were also replicated using independent US data provided by the American National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), which contains genetic information of 813 patients with CD.

Dr Maniatis said: "The discovery of so many additional genes for Crohn's and much more precise locations within the gene-regions was partly because of the highly informative genetic maps of the human genome that we have used in our approach to locating the genes involved."

He added: "The success of our work was also attributable to the fact that we were able to subdivide patients by disease presentation. Data stratification can help sort out the genetics, and before long genetics will be able to sort out patients".

The team have provided the first clear evidence that some clinical sub-groups of patients are likely to carry different risk genes and their study shows how with a sufficiently powerful method more genes can be found in small groups of patients.

Professor Dallas Swallow, a collaborator and co-author also from the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution & Environment, said: "Some genes are likely to have a large effect and some small, but not all genes will act the same way in all patients. We can combine all this information with that obtained by others from examining cellular and molecular changes to sort this out. This will ultimately lead to more personalised strategies for treatment".

We've zeroed in on nine of the most specific types of guys ? from sports fans to sartorialists ? and picked presents that will bring joy to your boyfriend's world, whether he's been naughty or nice.?

1. Sports nut
There are 2 kinds of guys into sports: couch-bound quarterbacks and dudes who think they smell better basted in their own sweat. Both men thrive on the experience. A shot of adrenaline when something extraordinary happens, the bro-zy camaraderie of us versus them and the sweet taste of a well-deserved beverage. Get the sports nut in your life tickets to see his team of choice (yes, it's best to bite the bullet and get one for yourself too ? unless you enjoy it, too. Then, even better!). Check out Stubhub.com, and try to score the best seats possible from other fans.

2. Music snob
Is your guy crazy into Band You?ve Never Heard Of? Does he insist everyone?s new stuff sucks? Does he worship Jeff Lynne as his personal lord and savior? Normally, I?d say to give that guy a recorder and let him make music for you but instead, go for something that will let him experience his music in his own little world. IPick him up a pair of high-end headphones, like Bose's QuietComfort Acoustic Noise-Canceling Headphones.?

3. Comedy nerd
It?s not all wieners and fart jokes, ladies. From reveling in the majesty of Louie to sad clowning it up with Marc Maron to laughing at, well, really esoteric fart and wiener jokes with The State, some of us take our comedy VERY seriously. If you live in New York, Los Angeles or Chicago, you could get your guy improv lessons but there are a quarter of a billion US citizens who live outside of those MSAs. Instead, give him a history lesson. Give your comedy nerd the audio version of Steve Martin?s Born Standing Up?or Tina Fey's?Bossypants

4. Bookworm
For your fella, reading is FUNdamental. He?s read the classics. Amazon just sends him books after a favorable review in The Atlantic. Your casual-reading Kung Fu is no match for his literati karate. Forget getting him some horse plop tablet reader, get him something classic, something collectable, something leatherbound. Get your bookworm a collectible leatherbound version of his favorite novel or a unique, antique book from a classic 19th century author. Try sites like Easton Press Books and Poor Man's Books?? or visit a local antique books dealer.

5. Workaholic
our busy bee has no hands because his fingers have been worked past the bone. Lots of men define themselves by how their bills get paid, but your guy burns the midnight oil before the REAL nitty gritty gets done. While he probably needs a reminder that his mighty empire won?t fit in his coffin, it?s the holiday season, so get him something that can go in a slightly smaller box. Get your little workaholic the gift of relaxation: a private session with massage therapist ? and maybe even give you a few pointers for conducting future at-home massage sessions. Look up a massage therapist in your area at Spa Finder.?Keep reading...
