ROME (AP) ? Jerzy Kluger, a Polish-born Jew who was a lifetime friend and childhood playmate of the late Pope John Paul II and who lost much of his family to Nazi death camps, has died in a Rome clinic, his widow said Monday. He was 90.
Irene Kluger told The Associated Press that her husband died on Dec. 31 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for three years and was buried Monday. The couple lived in Rome for decades, but at John Paul's urging, Kluger, a World War II veteran, occasionally returned to visit Wadowice, the southern Polish town where the two spent their boyhoods, his widow said.
Kluger, a year younger than John Paul, who died in 2005, was one of the last living childhood friends of the late pontiff. He was 5 when he met Karol Wojtyla, who would become a priest two decades later in his predominantly Catholic homeland, and eventually Krakow's cardinal, before being elected as history's only Polish-born pontiff in 1978.
The two ? Kluger known by his nickname Jurek and the future pope known as Lolek ? played soccer, shared school benches and lived in houses across a square in Wadowice. Kluger also recalled daring swims with the young Wojtyla in the Skawa River during the warmer months. In winter, the two also hiked for hours to the top of the local mountain to ski.
Upon John Paul's death, Kluger said the pope always had a passion for social justice.
"Even when he was a young boy, he would already show great concern for social equality, especially for the Jews," Kluger told the AP. "This was very important to him from a very early age."
John Paul's landmark efforts to improve Vatican-Jewish relations, including a historic visit to Rome's main synagogue, were a legacy of his 26-year papacy.
The pope and Kluger kept in touch across time and distance, and Kluger occasionally visited the Vatican so they could dine together, meetings that apparently helped shape John Paul's thinking on Jewish issues.
George Weigel, a biographer of John Paul, wrote in "Witness to Hope" that Kluger was a "sounding board" for John Paul in his thinking about the history of relations between Jews and Catholics and relations with Israel.
Early in his papacy John Paul asked his friend to start informal discussions with Israeli diplomats in Rome as the Vatican began to consider establishing full diplomatic ties with the Jewish state, according to Weigel.
Kluger's efforts did not lead to an immediate establishment of diplomatic ties, which occurred only in 1993, but may have helped change the thinking of skeptical Israeli officials, Weigel wrote.
Elan Steinberg, vice president of the organization American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants, said Kluger's passing was both a moment of individual sorrow as well as of "symbolic remembrance for the link with Pope John Paul under whom a revolution in the advancement of Catholic-Jewish relations was realized."
"Their childhood friendship was seared by their shared experience of coming under the Nazi yoke in Poland," Steinberg said in an emailed statement. "There can be no question that John Paul's warmth and gestures to the Jewish people were shaped by his personal witness of Nazi horrors."
Irene Kluger said her husband lost his mother, sister and virtually the rest of his entire family, except for his father, a lawyer, when his relatives perished in German death camps in Poland in World War II.
Jerzy Kluger was among the Polish troops led by Poland's celebrated World War II general, Wladyslaw Anders, during the battle against the Nazis at Monte Cassino, south of Rome, in 1944, she said.
Anders' troops fought as the Second Polish Corps of the British Eighth Army. Poles had risen up at home against the German occupiers and also fought alongside the British and other Allies in the struggle to defeat Hitler's regime.
"He never, never thought that the Germans would do what they did in Poland," Irene Kluger said of her husband.
Kluger was there when John Paul's successor, the German-born Benedict XVI, visited Wadowice in 2006, a day before he visited Auschwitz. Said Kluger of Benedict's stop in the death camp: "It's good that the pope will go there. The visit to Auschwitz is a question of responsibility."
Up to 1.5 million people, most of them Jews, were killed by the Nazis at Auschwitz.
Besides his Irish-born wife, Kluger is survived by a daughter.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? NASA says its twin spacecraft are now circling the moon on a mission to measure lunar gravity.
The latest probe slipped into orbit on New Year's Day, joining its twin, which arrived a day earlier.
The Grail spacecraft ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? will spend the next two months spiraling closer to the surface. In March, they will begin mapping the moon's uneven gravity field from orbit to understand its interior down to the core.
The probes were launched in September and took a roundabout trip to the moon.

WEST PALM BEACH?
The first baby born in South Florida in 2012 was a healthy boy born to a Lake Worth couple just after midnight Sunday, while one of the area's biggest new kids arrived 40 minutes later in Hollywood.
The two boys take honors as the first births recorded this new year in Palm Beach and Broward counties.
With a Jan. 4 due date for the birth of their second child, Martineau and Bertha Dante of Lake Worth did not make any plans to party on New Year's Eve.
"I had a feeling," said Martineau Dante, 29.
The couple's second son, named Marcos Jarett Dante, was born at 12:02 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach. He weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces, his dad said.
The first birth recorded in Broward was also a boy, who clocked in at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood at 42 minutes after midnight. Devonte Accius weighed 9 pounds, 9 ounces.
He also rushed his due date, which was Jan. 9.
"I was told the baby would be about seven pounds," said the boy's happy mother, Rose Lazarre, 27, as she held her first child Sunday afternoon in the hospital room. "It was a surprise."
The boy's father, Diomene Accius, 31, said that when Lazarre returns to work as a casino cashier in two months, the couple would share child care duties. He works days as an insulation installer.
"I feel like I won the lottery today," said Accius, who lives with Rose in Hallandale Beach. "I feel like a millionaire."
In West Palm Beach, Dante said he and his wife were "elated" about the birth of their second son, which took place just one hour after they arrived at the hospital.
When Bertha Dante, 29, began having contractions Saturday evening, Martineau Dante said the couple went for a walk in their Lake Worth neighborhood. By the time they returned home, "I just grabbed the packed bag and got in the car," he said. Her contractions were five minutes apart, he said.
Dante, also 29, a computer technician for the Palm Beach County library system, said he called the couple's physician and the hospital on the way, and from then on, all went smoothly.
"To have a baby is a blessing from God," said Dante. "And he has an easy birth date to remember."
Marcos was expected to meet his older brother, Marlo, when the 2-year-old comes to the hospital Sunday afternoon with his grandparents. They spent Sunday morning at church.

To Kelly Clarkson, the Republican presidential field would suck without Ron Paul.
But, the pop star explained adamantly after her endorsement of the Texas congressman was met with many boos and hisses from the peanut gallery, that doesn't mean she endorses the party line.
"I am really sorry if I have offended anyone," Clarkson wrote on whosay, responding to the backlash to her "I love Ron Paul!" Facebook post.

"Obviously that was not my intent," she continued. "I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite."
A little background: Clarkson reportedly voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and, last year, she performed for the president, his family and the nation on the America Celebrates July 4th special taped at Ford Theatre.
But while a bunch of, shall we say, concerned citizens took offense at Clarkson saying she would vote for Paul for president if he won the GOP nomination, the haters apparently took no issue with offending right back.
MORE: Coldplay vs. Kelly Clarkson--Who Won?
"Man my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight," Clarkson's post continued. "If y'all ever disagree with something I say please don't feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles or viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you. I was raised to respect people and their decisions and beliefs and I hope you will grant me the same decency. If you don't agree with me simply unfollow me. It's really that easy. I hope you don't because I would love the chance to hear what you have to say but if you're so blinded by hate you can't seek peace and progress then that is your unfortunate prerogative."
As for Paul, his team tweeted, "Kelly Clarkson loves Ron Paul," and linked to her initial statement--"I love Ron Paul... I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote."
Paul's site also noted a response to Clarkson from fellow singer Michelle Branch: "@kelly_clarkson I wholeheartedly agree. #RonPaul."
And yes, Branch attracted her share of haters, too:
"Hmm. Didn't mean to offend," she tweeted afterward. "I am not racist and am absolutely not a homophobe. Just trying to weed through the non-impressive choices! I should listen to my father who said never to share my beliefs on religion&politics. However I will always share my view on civil rights."

"A Swedish woman (Lena Pahlsson) says she found her wedding ring -- missing since 1995 -- wrapped around a carrot she pulled out of the family vegetable patch.
Ola (her husband) said he thinks the ring may have ended up in the family`s compostable food bin, which would have been spread over the vegetable patch. Another theory involves the family`s sheep, which is sometimes fed kitchen scraps."
UPI
This story is heartwarming and inspiring because the couple is still married after all these years. If Lena were divorced, the only thought on her mind when she found the long-lost ring would have been, "how much money can I get for this thing."
The Kardashian bimbo who got divorced after only a few weeks, and Katy Perry who is dumping her husband after only a few months get all the attention, but there are many couples who take their marriage vows seriously.
Lena`s ring will have to be re-sized, because in the last few years her finger has grown larger. Let`s hope that the love that these?lovebirds share has also grown larger.
