Golden again, US wins 1st Olympic title since '96

LONDON (AP) ? The Americans grabbed hands and backed up, eager to get a better view of the scoreboard.

There was really no need. That Olympic gold medal was in the bag the minute they took the floor.

The Americans lived up to their considerable hype and then some Tuesday night, routing Russia and everybody else on their way to their first Olympic title since 1996. Their score of 183.596 was a whopping five points ahead of Russia, and they were so far ahead their last event, floor exercise, was more like a coronation.

With the Russians on the sidelines crying, the Americans stood at the center of the floor, clapping, cheering and basking in a golden glow. When the score for captain Aly Raisman flashed, the Americans screamed and a chant of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" rang out around the arena. The women held up their index fingers for the cameras ? just in case anyone had a doubt.

The Americans had come into the last two Olympics as world champions, only to leave without a gold. But this team is the strongest, top to bottom, the USA has ever had, and the rest of the world never stood a chance. After the U.S. opened with a barrage of booming vaults, everyone else was playing for silver.

Now all they have to do is find themselves a catchy nickname, like "The Magnificent Seven" from 1996. Some have suggested "The Fab Five," but that belongs to Michigan basketball's Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Co. Others have tossed out "The Fierce Five."

How about "Best Gymnastics Team in the World. By A Lot."

Some teenagers might find that pressure tough to bear, but the Americans reveled in it. When they saw the Russians and Romanians peeking in the doorway during training sessions, they would add some extra oomph to their routines, the better to intimidate the competition.

And when the gold was on the line, the Americans were simply spectacular.

They essentially won the gold medal with their first event, vault, putting on a fireworks show right in front of the Russians.

All of the Americans do Amanars, one of the toughest vaults in the world ? a roundoff onto the takeoff board, back handspring onto the table and 2.5 twisting somersaults before landing. It's got a start value ? the measure of difficulty ? of 6.5, a whopping 0.7 above the vault most other gymnasts do, and they ripped off one massive one after another.

World champion Jordyn Wieber went first and did perhaps the best one she's ever done, getting great height in the air with her legs locked together. When her feet slammed into the mat on landing, she threw up her arms and smiled broadly. Anyone who wondered how she would recover from the shock of failing to qualify for the all-around competition got their answer.

Gabby Douglas went next and her vault was even better. And then came McKayla Maroney, who let everyone know why she's a heavy favorite to add the Olympic gold to her world title in vault. She got so much height on her Amanar it's a wonder she didn't bump her head on the overhead camera. She hit the mat with tremendous force yet didn't so much as wiggle, triumphantly thrusting her arms in the air as she saluted the judges.

The Americans strutted out of the event with a 1.7-point lead, and never looked back.

Tyradel: Bellowing Flames

"Ack! Ancients damn it! Urza forces closing in sir, and fast!" Private First Class Denrio Evictus shouted over the exploding shells and ceaseless gunfire that erupted into the atmosphere. The loud grinding of tank treads and overhead roars of Griffon fighter planes split the air. Captain Bosch Vaneers crouched low, hovering over a recently deceased corporal; he was taken to High Realm by way of a bullet to the head. The captain peered around the corner, barely evading a large metal spike that ripped into the structure of the building he sought cover behind. There was a massive wave of these monsters, armored in a hefty rust-colored metal that made them appear even more imposing. They were large beasts, standing, at average, at least seven to eight feet tall. Their gnarled faces illustrated hatred, and their prowling, twisted and thorny tanks embodied much of that hatred. Shells erupted into the ground, ripping concrete and causing a rain of grit. Captain Vaneers turned to his lieutenant, Beriam Tersis, a Hir'zan of great merit. He was a brave and loyal high elf, but now his face painted a troubled spirit. A heavy, sinking frown and wide, terrified green eyes locked onto his captain's face. "Tersis, I need you to retrieve the Ram," Vaneers said plainly, pointing across the street into an alleyway full of fallen comrades. Atop one of these dead men was a large metal cylinder, green in color: the Ram, a missile launcher that ejected high impact explosive projectiles that had the strength to rip bunkers apart. Vaneers continued, "We'll provide cover fire. You get over there, arm that damned thing, and blast these monsters back to the Underrealm where they came from! Move quick, and don't you dare die on me. That's an order! Now move!"

Beriam's heart was pulsating, much like the gunfire that pierced the atmosphere around him. He held his rifle tightly, his knuckles growing an anticipated white. He was scared, he knew. But he had made a career of not letting his captain down, and he wasn't about to end that career now, dead in the streets of this war-torn city. He waited for his captain's order, and cover fire was unleashed upon the enemy. Beriam sprinted, unsure that his feet even touched the ground at all. He swerved, ducked, and stumbled as he avoided death by mere centimeters. He was just feet away from his objective, when life as he knew it took a sudden and unexpected turn upside-down. He was on his back, groggy and bleary-eyed. He saw double, triple of the clouds above him. Turning his head to the right, he saw the advancing hordes of the Urza. 'Move it, Tersis!,' he shouted mentally. 'Move, for your father's sake!' He practically glided to his feet and dove for cover into the alley. He hit the pavement hard but stayed focused. Adrenaline pushed its way through his veins like a speeding bullet, and his thoughts were on one thing: completion. He heaved the Ram from the corpse of the human soldier, and briefly bid him a safe journey to High Realm before grasping one of the missiles that lay scattered on the ground. Beriam jammed one of the projectiles down the tunnel of a weapon, arming the lethal tube and shouldering it. Preesed his back against the wall of the building; his safe place, for now. He closed his eyes, inhaled and sighed. 'Ancients pardon my sins as I stare into the face of death, never wavering, never faltering. Should I fall, guide me swiftly and safely to your everlasting embrace in High Realm. This I beg in your uttermost mercy. Save me.' His mental prayer complete, Beriam whipped around the corner and fired. There was a large kick, and Beriam was thrown to the ground. The Ram clattered to his side, and the missile flew through the air, producing a loud, ear-shattering boom. The arrow-shaped missile whisped through the air. Several Urza screaming in fear and dove to the ground. They left one of their tanks open for destruction. It was ripped asunder before exploding in a firestorm of destruction. A fraction of the advancing Urza were consumed by flames, shrieking in agony as the realization of doom washed over them. Beriam could only watch, and grin at his luck as the charred heap of metal that was his victim flew high into the air and came cascading back down atop another of those metal behemoths, also causing more crushed foot soldiers in the process. Captain Vaneers' men fired from cover, taking down more and more of the assaulting Urza infantry. Beriam wasted no more time. He grapped the Ram, dashed back into the alleyway, and loaded another missile. He got low this time, as again he rounded the corner and targeted the third and final Growler tank. He fired, sending that hulk of a weapon back to whatever machine hell it was wrought from. The Urza were riled up now, charging at full speed towards the Vanguards in the alleyways.

They were met with nonstop gunfire, and only when Captain Vaneers witnessed the last Urza soldier fall to his gruesome and deserved death did he give the cease fire order. With this wave punished and destroyed, Captain Vaneers congratulated his men for a hard-fought skirmish and well-deserved victory. Beriam walked up alongside his captain, and was met with a proud clap on the shoulder. "You did great, lieutenant," he said. Beriam smiled and stared his captain in the face.

"I know. I was there."

When I first looked at these, I thought about where they'd go. Immediately I thought of decorating a child's room. Instead, I realized this wasn't going to go in a kid's room. This is for a grown man who's proud of his nerd culture. Hagley Park group seeks to stop ground work | Stuff.co.nz

A group opposed to a cricket ground development at Hagley Park is seeking an injunction to stop work from proceeding.

A letter from Save Hagley Park was sent yesterday to Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and city councillors, outlining plans to seek the injunction.

Last month, the council voted 12-1 against Canterbury Cricket's proposal to spend $20 million on a full international upgrade of the cricket venue, but decided to go ahead with a scheduled $1m ground upgrade.

Save Hagley Park spokesman Martin Meehan said the group was "outraged" work was set to begin this week, despite councillors rejecting Canterbury Cricket's proposal in its current form.

"It is our view that the council's proceeding with the work on Hagley Oval for a new wicketblock and outfield upgrade, appears to pre-empt any final council decision, in respect of a revised proposal from Canterbury Cricket," the letter said.

Last week, the group met with the council's sport and recreation manager John Filsell and Canterbury Cricket to see if a compromise could be reached.

Meehan said it was "wrong" to start this work when the international upgrade project was on hold.

The work should be delayed at least until the central-city blueprint plans had been released and discussed, he said.

"It seems like the councillors and the actual council staff are on two very different tracks . . . John Filsell said the project was to get the venue ready for the [cricket] world cup [in 2015]." Filsell yesterday said he could not comment on the injunction until he had "had time to understand" what Save Hagley Park was saying.

Canterbury Cricket chief executive Lee Germon said he understood work on the upgrade was starting soon but did not know the exact date.

"This is the council's project . . . this work has been scheduled for a long time and this project is to allow us to have first-class cricket in Christchurch because we currently don't have a venue."

Germon said the Save Hagley Park needed to understand that the upgrade project was separate from the proposed international upgrade.

The Hassen Family: They're Willing to Go With the Flow and Quiet

Hello,

I had two boys last year and 3 girls this year. Just as mentioned both sets of students have been very polite, willing to go with the flow and quiet.

We are enjoying conversating as much as possible, one seems to able to speak English and understand much better or is less shy. I try to draw out the other two also I do manage to get a few comments here and there.

Last night Friday, we had taco night they seemed to enjoy this and carmel flan for dessert. I have made fish, meatloaf, turkey chili, stir fry all from home and for breakfast bagels, toast and eggs, rice cereal and they have liked all of it. They haven?t been over eaters or snackers.

One has called home often and I spoke English with her father. Also last night we taught them Crazy Eight, and Go Fish card games, and they taught us a Chinese Card Game with the cards they brought us as a gift.

They also played Jenga with my 12 yr old. I left them alone for hours laughing, then we tried all kinds of snack food that they had been hesitant to eat before.

Mostly they will eat whatever I cook and we had a Chinese Buffett night in Raleigh at ?Hibacchi Grill? quite lovely. We also tried Italian night at ?Pulcinella in Durham? highly recommended, they got spag and meatballs and salads there seemed to enjoy it.

We only went shopping once and they have told me they do not like clothes much , which astounds me for teens. They do not wish to go to the movies or swimming at the pool which surprised me but that?s fine. We did watch ?Tangled? today a disney film.

This weekend they wanted to rest and use their computer.

They are also very polite, respectful and quiet. Just like last year I too am praising there attitudes, politness and eating everything on their plate without complaining.

We have shared several family photograhs, some dances, and tid bits of information about family life there and here.

I am enjoying it but a tad tired of the meal preps and all, I do not make them help me. Maybe I should next week and try out the cooking from their end idea.

I would like to attend the international festival where is it at?

British boxer Ogogo dedicates win to stricken mum

British middleweight boxer Anthony Ogogo dedicated his opening victory at the Olympics on Saturday to his ailing mother, laid low by a brain haemorrhage last month.

The 23-year-old clinched a 13-6 first round win over Dominican Republic opponent Junior Castillo Martinez and immediately turned his thoughts to his mother back in Britain.

"This one is for my mum," he said. "She had a brain haemorrhage six weeks ago and she is still in bed, so I don't think she would have watched the bout but I can't wait to ring her."

He added: "It's a bit of a family affair actually as one of my sisters is due to go into labour today."

Ogogo next fights world champion Ievgan Khytrov of Ukraine.

"That doesn't bother me. I've never fought him before but I have the best coach in the world and with this crowd behind me I have the beating of him," he predicted.

As impressive as he was in his division, so was American Joseph Diaz Junior in the bantamweights who showed why he is one of his team's brightest medal hopes with an impressive opening round win.

The 19-year-old, who has pledged to have a successful boxing career to help his family financially, defeated tough Ukrainian Pavlo Ishchenko 19-9.

But it was a bitter-sweet victory as he next meets top seed Lazaro Alvaro Estrada of Cuba on Wednesday.

"I felt great out there. I said to myself he is just like me, he sweats like me and he bleeds like me," said Diaz, who is coached by his father.

"It means a lot to me that my family are in the crowd.

Diaz admitted that he had sacrificed going to Friday's late-night opening ceremony because of being up first on Saturday.

"I am not here for the opening ceremony; I am here for the gold medal," said Diaz, whose country are seeking just their second gold medal in boxing since the 1996 Games.

He lost to Estrada in the quarter-finals at last year's world championships.

"I have a different gameplan to the time I fought him and lost. He is the top seed and it is a difficult task but this fight has settled my nerves and I am going to put on a good show on Wednesday."

Irishman John Joe Nevin demolished Dennis Ceylan of Denmark, his country's first Olympic boxer in 16 years, romping to a 21-6 win and threatens to go further than he did in Beijing where he failed to make the quarter-finals.

Even Nevin, whose compatriot Darren O'Neill also reached the second round in the middleweights, was taken aback by the margin of victory.

"Probably I wasn't expecting to win by as much but when I perform at my best I can beat anyone," said the 23-year-old.

"I know him (Ceylan), he's a nice lad and we're quite good friends.

"He was even talking to me in the ring in the last round, saying ?you're boxing brilliant John Joe'. It gave me a little bit of a buzz. I was talking to him to try and slow him down as well."

Countries where people work least

Michaela Rehle / Reuters

People toast at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, the nation where people work the least.

By Michael B. Sauter, Alexander E.M. Hess & Lisa A. Nelson, 24/7 Wall St.

As the global economic recovery grinds to a halt, many workers feel the increased pressure of holding on to their jobs and putting bread on their tables. Some may hold several jobs or simply put in more hours at work. Indeed, in 2011, for the second year in a row, the average hours worked per person increased in the United States. But this is not the case among all developed nations. In fact, while people in countries like the U.S. and Spain increased their hours worked, the average for developed nations fell slightly.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 best countries for entrepreneurs

Earlier this month, the?Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)?released its 2012 Employment Outlook. The outlook paints a picture of the current labor markets in 32 member states, most of which are located in the Europe. In several countries, the average hours worked per year has fallen by more than 20. Based on the OECD report, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 countries where people work the least.

The average American worked 1,797 hours in 2011, or about 34.5 hours per week. In the countries on our list, the average hours worked was 1,611 or less, or the equivalent of 30 hours per week. In Austria, the average employed person worked just 1,330 hours, or a bit more than 25 hours per week.

Hours worked in some of these countries declined further over the past year. In Denmark, the average hours worked fell by 40 hours for each of the past two years. In Luxembourg, they fell by 51 hours between 2010 and 2011 alone.

The changes in hours worked on average can be affected, in part, by an actual increase or decrease in the amount of time full-time employees spend at work. However, a review of the data shows that part-time employment is also a major contributor to these changes. Of the 10 countries with the fewest average hours worked, nine were among the top 15 nations with the most part-time workers relative to the total working population, and four were in the top five. Netherlands has the highest proportion of part-time employees at 37.2 percent. That is more than double the OECD average. In the United States, only 12.6 percent of the total workforce work part-time.

The countries on this list are among the wealthiest in the OECD, which generally represents the more developed nations. Of the 10 countries with the fewest average hours worked, nine have the highest gross domestic product per capita. The exception is France, which has the eleventh-highest GDP.

Exemplifying the wealth of these nations, wages are also extremely high. The average U.S. worker earned a little more than $30 per hour in 2011. In these 10 countries, workers earned at least $31.27 per hour, and as much as $48.82 (in Denmark) per hour.

Mark Keese, head of OECD?s employment division, told 24/7 Wall St. that the wealth and productivity of a nation plays a large part in the structure of employment in the country. One component of this is the technological sophistication of industry. ?Generally, richer countries can and should see reductions in hours worked ... basically, you have stronger productivity performance and eventually you?re replacing workers with machines, which allow you to cut back on the number of hours of work.?

24/7 Wall St.: 10 countries where young people can't find a job

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the OECD?s 2012 Employment Outlook to identify the countries with the fewest hours worked in 2011. The 26 countries we reviewed were all members of the OECD. We excluded four because current data were not available. We also compared these countries via other metrics provided by the OECD, including GDP per capita, unemployment and a variety of other employment and quality-of-life data for 2011 or the most recent available year.

These are the 10 countries where people work the least:

1) Germany

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,330
  • ?Average working hours per week:?25.6
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$35.33 (7th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?6 percent

Every year since 2007, Germans had the fewest hours worked on average, with a low of 1,296 in 2009. One reason this number was so low is that in 2011 14.7 percent of all employees were temporary workers, while 22.1 percent only worked part-time, both above OECD averages. Those in permanent, full-time positions also had significant time for themselves, as only 5.14 percent of Germans work more than 50 hours a week, less than half the 10.86 percent of Americans who worked that much in 2011. The average German had 15.31 hours a day to devote to leisure, one of the highest figures among OECD countries. In 2009, the German government?introduced a program?that allowed companies to cut work weeks for employees, as opposed to firing them, in exchange for the government?s pledge to cover remaining wages.

2) Netherlands

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,336
  • ?Average working hours per week:?25.7
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$42.67 (4th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment:?4.4 percent

Workers in the Netherlands enjoy low levels of unemployment, high incomes and one of the smallest proportion of employees working 50 or more hours a week -- at only 0.7 percent. GDP per capita is also third highest among the countries we reviewed. In the OECD report, the Netherlands had the highest reported proportion of part-time workers in 2011 at 37.2 percent.

3) France

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,392
  • ?Average working hours per week:?26.8
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$34.26 (8th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?9.3 percent

The average annual hours worked for employees in France has decreased by nearly 100 hours since 1995. The French embrace their leisure hours, devoting an average of 15.33 hours to personal time, the fourth highest of the OECD countries reported. Some argue that?French productivity?is an issue, and compared to the average of 26 OECD countries reported, French workers spent about 17 percent less time at work in 2011. Yet, workers earned one of the highest average hourly salaries of the OECD nations, around $34.26 per hour.

24/7 Wall St: The 10 most educated ?countries in the world

4) Austria

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,431
  • ?Average working hours per week:?27.5
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$36.63 (6th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?4.2 percent

Last year, Austria had a 4.2 percent unemployment rate, nearly half the OECD?s unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. Despite this low unemployment figure, many workers could not find full-time jobs as 18.9 percent were part-time employees, more than the OECD?s average of 16.5 percent. Whereas some Austrians worked few hours, still others did exactly the opposite, as 9.02 percent of employees worked more than 50 hours a week. Austria has high average wages, at $36.63 per hour -- well above the $30.30 per hour in the United States. However, wages only increased an average of 0.3 percent per year between 2007 and 2011, below the OECD?s average of 0.5 percent, while the number of hours the average employee worked has fallen by 3.7 percent during that time.

5) Belgium

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,446
  • ?Average working hours per week:?27.8
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$38.90 (5th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?7.2 percent

In 2011, Belgium?s annual unemployment rate fell to 7.2 percent from 8.4 percent in 2010. Not only does the country have an unemployment rate well below that of the U.S., which had an unemployment rate of 9.1 percent in 2011, but Belgians also work far less than Americans. Compared to 2008, when employees in Belgium worked 1,469 hours on average, by 2011 they worked 23 hours less. Meanwhile, from 2009 to 2011, the number of part-time workers rose from 18.2 percent to 18.8 percent of all employees. Many of those who took these new positions were women, who constituted 79.9 percent of all part-time employees in 2011. That was more than all but two other countries.

Promotional Rugby Ball - What to consider when choosing a ball for ...

Promotional balls When the administration of a team considers purchasing equipment for the players, quality is always first on their mind. A good ball for example must be well sown and made from the best type of leather. The dimensions should be perfect and the size and weight should meet the requirements set by various sports governing bodies. The shape should also be considered since different types of balls have different types of shapes. A mini rugby ball for example is oval shaped and is made from rubber.

However, apart from these requirements, a ball could also have an attractive look and feel to it. This helps to make the ball more dynamic and appealing as well as more vibrant as it is thrown from one end of the field to another. For this, a rugby team, for example, could choose to purchase a promotional rugby ball. These balls usually feature various graphics and color finishes as well as different types of paint and pictures. All these are aimed at ensuring that the ball is appealing to the eye of the beholder.

There are various designs that are used and the administration of the team could choose the one that they fancy most. However, the administration could also choose to customize the design to meet their promotional needs. The ball could include a logo from a well known organization in the colors and designs of the organization. Such a ball will meet all the requirements of a regular ball in terms of weight and size, but the color and graphics on it will be different.

The type of sport When purchasing a ball, it is important to consider the type of sport that the ball will be used in. This is because balls that are used in the game of football are very different from balls that are used in the game of basketball. This is because a basketball is handled by hand and therefore it should have more grips, than a soccer ball which is played using the foot. Other types of sports require balls that differ in terms of weight, shape, size and even material. It is therefore important for the administration of sports clubs to be familiar with this before they purchase a ball.

Ball manufacturers Furthermore, it is important to have information on the different ball manufacturers on your fingertips. This is because reputation is also important when choosing where to buy a sports ball from. For example, some netball manufacturers are known for making high quality balls that are durable and easy to play with. However, others do not have the same reputation as they may have made less appealing balls in the past. The administration should therefore do their homework and determine which manufacturers are the best when it comes to making the types of balls that they want.

In the strictest sense, a vegetarian is someone who will not eat meat.? The several types of vegetarians develop twist for this definition.? The forms are semi-vegetarian, the pesco-vegetarian, the lacto-ovo vegetarian, the ovo-vegetarian and the vegan.? The standards vary around the meals that every single kind of vegetarian eats.? Even so, one thing is certain; the vegetarian recipes usually do not involve red meat.

A vegetarian normally eats foods that come from plants.? The semi-vegetarian feeds on fish and chicken meat while the pesco-vegetarian eats exclusively fish meat.? The lacto-ovo vegetarian consumes no meat and yet eats dairy products together with eggs.? The ovo-vegetarian will not eat meat neither dairy products and yet consumes eggs.? Kate's Scrapbook: She's home!

Last month or so, I wrote about my cousin's daughter,?who's been in the NICU. Thankfully, she was able to come home this week?, for real. So if you hear cheering and happy crying all up and down the East Coast tonight, that would be why, as the news spreads via emails, texts, and social media :-)
(We're a big, extended family. How else are we gonna keep in touch unless we actually go to the reunions? And you know how I feel about leaving the house).
Thank you, nurses, doctors, and all staff at UT Medical Center NICU, and God.

Don't worry, I'll be back to writing about Batman next week, how an underground prison gets electricity, let alone TV reception (not as much a spoiler as you'd think).

Syrian regime?s thugs face retribution

Every war has its demons. The chaos of bullets and bombs gives rise to a certain breed of men who join the fight for the thrill of killing. In Syria these monsters who are the enforcers for President Bashar Assad?s regime are called the ?shabiha." If Assad's regime falls they could face retribution. Progress reported with candidate dengue vaccine

Trials in Thailand with a candidate vaccine for dengue, a potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease, have shown it to protect against three of the four virus strains, its French maker said Wednesday.

The first trials in humans proved the vaccine was safe and represented a key milestone in the quest for a dengue jab, vaccine-maker Sanofi Pasteur executive vice president Michel De Wilde said in a statement.

"This is also an important development for global public health, since there is currently no specific treatment or prevention for dengue."

The World Health Organisation says the disease infects between 50 million and 100 million people every year and kills more than 20,000 -- mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Latin America, but expanding rapidly including to parts of Europe.

Researchers estimate that some three billion people live in regions susceptible to dengue contagion and another 20 million tourists pass through them.

The disease caused by one of four virus serotypes results in fever, aches, rashes, vomiting and in rare cases death. Children are especially vulnerable.

Sanofi Pasteur said its candidate vaccine was effective against three of the four virus serotypes and analyses were under way "to understand the lack of protection for the fourth".

The company conducted trials on 4,000 children aged four to 11 in Thailand's Muang district, the results of which have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Larger Phase III trials with 31,000 adults and children are taking place in 10 countries in Asia and Latin America.

Amazon.com meets tiny 2Q profit expectations

SEATTLE (AP) ? Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday reported second-quarter earnings that matched Wall Street's meager expectations, but its revenue gains and outlook for the current quarter fell short of forecasts.

Net income in the three months to June 30 came to just $7 million, or a penny per share, a drop of 96 percent from $191 million, or 41 cents, a year ago.

That matched expectations of analysts polled by FactSet, although Amazon said its profit was hurt by a $65 million loss related to its acquisition of Kiva Systems Inc., a warehouse technology company that Amazon agreed to buy in March for $775 million in cash.

Revenue grew 29 percent to $12.83 billion, short of the $12.90 billion expected by analysts.

However, Amazon said that revenue was negatively impacted by currency movements to the tune of $272 million.

After initially falling, shares rose $3.04, or 1.4 percent, to $223.05 in extended trading following the release of results.

Sales of digital goods like Kindle e-books, music and movies rose 13 percent to $4.12 billion while sales of electronics and other items rose 38 percent to $8.16 billion.

The Seattle-based company said it expects third-quarter revenue to grow between 19 percent and 31 percent from a year ago. That amounts to sales of $12.9 billion to $14.3 billion. The midpoint is short of the $14.1 billion expected by analysts.

It also forecast a third-quarter operating loss of $50 million to $350 million.

Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak said the projected loss was due in part to investment in the company's fulfillment centers ahead of the all-important holiday quarter.

Roman holiday: UK boy, 11, flies without passport

(AP) ? The 11-year-old boy didn't have a passport, didn't have a ticket, didn't have a boarding pass, and got all the way from England to Italy on his own.

For him, the 1,000-mile (1,700-kilometer) journey was a great adventure ? and his excitement led to his discovery.

"He was chatting away about being off by himself," and passengers alerted the cabin crew, Russell Craig, a spokesman for Manchester Airport, said Wednesday.

The boy, who is known to be fascinated by transport and has a history of catching free rides on trains and buses, was sent back to Manchester on the return flight, Craig said.

For the airport, airline Jet2.com and the British government, Tuesday's incident was an embarrassing breach of security days before the start of the Olympics.

Ben Vogel, editor of HIS Jane's Airport Review, said he wasn't familiar with all the details of the Manchester incident but said it's a fundamental security principle that people aren't allowed aboard an aircraft if they have no right to be there ? whether or not they passed through a security scanner.

"It's not good, is it?" he said. "It is a security breach, if a non-threatening security breach."

An undisclosed number of security staff employed by the airport and airline employees have been suspended while authorities investigate.

"This is an unusual and serious breach and we are keen to find out what has gone on," said the government's transport secretary, Justine Greening.

Airport manager Craig, however, said "it's not technically a breach of security" because the boy did go through the normal security scan.

"The boy was no threat to the aircraft," he said. But he admitted the boy passed through five security checks before boarding the plane.

The first check came when he entered the secure area where an airport security officer is supposed to verify that the traveler has a boarding card or a staff pass.

"The boy arrived at security at a time when it was extra busy, there were a lot of families traveling," Craig said. While it's common for one member of a family to present all the boarding cards, he said, the officer failed to count to ensure that the number of cards matched the number of people going through.

The airline was responsible for four further checks on boarding, Craig said: for a passport, for boarding pass, another check at the aircraft door for a boarding pass stub with a seat assignment, and a final passenger count after everyone had boarded.

Manchester Airport is the third busiest in the United Kingdom after London Heathrow and London Gatwick. The security staff is hired and managed by airport officials.

The Manchester Evening News quoted Sarah Swayne, a passenger on the return flight, as saying the boy didn't seem to be fazed by the fuss he had caused.

"He just sat there chatting away about how he'd been trying to run away from home," Swayne was quoted as saying. "He seemed quite innocent, really, and I don't think it had sunk in how serious the situation was."

Airport officials described the boy as big for his age and on CCTV footage he appeared confident and betrayed no nervousness as he moved through the terminal.

Jet2.com issued a statement saying it had launched "a full investigation into what is a serious incident."

Jet2.com, owned by Dart Group PLC, is a European budget airline which operates 188 routes to 53 destinations. The airline traces its origins to a company founded in 1971 to fly flowers from Guernsey to the U.K. mainland.

How much would repealing Obamacare cost?

Repealing the health care law passed in 2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court in June would increase the federal deficit by $109 billion over 10 years, a new Congressional Budget Office analysis estimates.

The CBO on Tuesday rated the health care repeal bill passed by the House earlier this month and found that "the direct spending and revenue effects of enacting that legislation would cause a net increase in federal budget deficits of $109 billion over the 2013-2022 period." The primary reason for the deficit increase, the report showed, was the repeal of several tax increases within the health care law. While the repeal bill would reduce direct federal spending by $890 billion over that period, it would also slash more than $1 trillion in new taxes.

The House repeal bill, which passed unanimously among Republicans and received support from a handful of Democrats, is not expected to become law under the current Congress.

In a separate analysis, the CBO also measured the impact of the June Supreme Court ruling that struck down parts of the health care law but left core provisions intact, and found that it would save $84 billion because of reduced Medicaid spending.

The CBO estimated in 2011 that the health care law would reduce the federal deficit by $210 billion over 10 years because of the law's revenue increases.

Charging your iPad costs as little as $1.36 a year according to the EPRI

Charging your iPad costs as little as .36 a year according to EPRICharging your iPad every other day only costs you around $1.36 for a full years use according to a report by the EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute). We already knew that the iPad had amazing battery life but it is always interesting to find out approximately what it costs to keep it charged for a full year. The EPRI carried out extensive tests and discovered that it only consumes 12 kWh of electricity in a year.

The analysis shows that each model of the iPad consumes less than 12 kWh of electricity over the course of a year, based on a full charge every other day. By comparison, a plasma 42? television consumes 358 kWh of electricity a year. EPRI conducted the analysis in Knoxville, Tenn., at its power utilization laboratory. Costs may vary depending on what region that a consumer resides and the price of electricity in a particular location.

The assessment was conducted to determine the load requirements ? the amount of power needed to operate the devices -- of the increasingly popular iPad. According to Apple, 67 million of the devices have been purchased worldwide.

EPRI calculations show that the average energy used by all iPads in the market is approximately 590 gigawatt hours (GWh). In a scenario where the number of iPads tripled over the next two years, the energy required would be nearly equivalent to two 250-megawatt (MW) power plants operating at a 50 percent utilization rate. A quadrupling of sales in two years would require energy generated by three 250-MW power plants.

This came as a bit of a surprise to me; I assumed it would cost a lot more during the course of a year. Obviously if you use a charger in your car it will cost you nothing to charge it up but given that its only $1.36 a year it?s really not worth worrying about.

As a comparison, notebook computers use approximately 72 kWh of electricity which is six times more than the iPad. The next time you are thinking about getting your notebook out to do something that can easily be done on an iPad, think again. It could save you a few dollars each year just by using your iPad more.

Sharp to cut thousands of jobs: Nikkei

Mon Jul 23, 2012 11:22pm EDT

(Reuters) - Sharp Corp may lay off several thousand workers and sell office buildings in Tokyo as losses at Japan's last major fabricator of liquid crystal displays for televisions expand, the Nikkei business daily said.

The maker of Aquos TVs will likely post a group net loss of about 100 billion yen ($1.28 billion) for the April-June quarter after a $198 million settlement in a U.S. LCD cartel case added to its deficit during the three months, the paper said without citing anyone.

"We are considering various measures to tackle the difficult situation, and will disclose the details when it is finalized," Sharp said in a statement. Its shares fell as much as 5.4 percent in early trading in Tokyo.

The reported deficit for the quarter compares with a Starmine estimate for a net loss of 87 billion yen calculated by Thomson Reuters from four analysts' forecasts that gives more weight to those whose past predictions have been most accurate.

Sharp, which posted a record net loss of 376 billion yen in the year ended March 31, has been hammered by a drop in demand for its TVs that has left it with a glut of LCD panels produced by its main plant in Sakai, western Japan.

The company expects TV sales this business year to drop by 19 percent to 10 million with sales of LCD panels predicted to jump 29 percent after it retools production to make the smaller screens used in smartphones and tablet PCs.

Sharp in March agreed to sell a 46.48 percent stake in the Sakai facility to Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industries, part of the Foxconn Group.

Hon Hai, a major supplier to Apple Inc, is also purchasing shares in Sharp worth 66.9 billion yen giving it an 11 percent stake.

Existence of vitamin 'deserts' in the ocean confirmed

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? First hypothesized in the 1960s, marine zones where B-vitamins are undetectable may influence the growth of phytoplankton, the foundation of sea life. Using a newly developed analytical technique, a team led by scientists at USC was the first to identify long-hypothesized vitamin B deficient zones in the ocean.

"This is another twist to what limits life in the ocean," said Sergio Sa?udo-Wilhelmy, professor of biological and earth sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and lead author on a paper about the vitamin-depleted zones that will appear in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on July 23.

B vitamins are organic compounds dissolved in the ocean and are important for living cells to function. Zones poor in B vitamins may inhibit the growth and proliferation of phytoplankton, which are tiny microorganisms at the base of the food chain in the ocean.

"An important result of our study is that the concentrations of the five major B vitamins vary independently and appear to have different sources and sink," said co-author David Karl, professor of oceanography and director of the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) at the University of Hawaii. "This could lead to complex interactions among populations of microbes, from symbiosis to intense competition."

In addition to being food for the tiniest sea animals, phytoplankton also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, an important process when levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels are the highest they have been in half a million years.

The team developed a new method of concentrating water samples and then analyzing them using a mass spectrometer, which identifies and measures the quantity of an unknown compound in a given sample by first ionizing and breaking-up the compound and then quantifying the fragmented ions or molecules produced. (Mass spectrometry is also used to identify steroid use in athletes' urine samples.)

In their PNAS article, the researchers are sharing their technique with their colleagues around the world to help advance related research.

"The most important thing is that everyone with the right equipment can do it," Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said.

Next, Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said he plans to investigate what causes varying amounts of B-vitamins in different regions of the ocean, and try to determine exactly how that affects phytoplankton blooms. This includes a comprehensive set of experiments in the North Pacific Ocean as part of C-MORE's ongoing Hawaii Ocean Experiment.

Periodically, phytoplankton experience population explosions known as "blooms." In the case of certain phytoplankton that produce toxins, these blooms become toxic, such as the so-called "red" tides. Temperature, sunlight and nutrients in the water all appear to influence these blooms, but the exact causes have yet to be pinned down. One hypothesis is that vitamins B7 and B12 may act as triggers.

"It's crazy that after 100 years of study, we still don't fully understand what controls different phytoplankton blooms in the ocean," Sa?udo-Wilhelmy said.

University investigating shooting suspect's deliveries

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? The University of Colorado said Sunday it was investigating whether shooting suspect James Holmes used his position as a graduate student to order materials in the potentially deadly booby traps that police said they found in his apartment.

Holmes, 24, got deliveries over four months to his home and school, authorities have said. The university is looking into what was received at the school to assist police with their investigation, said spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery.

The suspect was described as a budding scientist, brimming with potential, who pursued a graduate program even as he planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said.

Investigators spent hours Saturday removing explosive materials from inside Holmes' apartment a day after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a movie theater minutes into a premiere of the "The Dark Knight Rises." The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

His apartment was booby trapped with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that could have killed "whoever entered it," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have likely been one of his officers.

Inside the apartment, bomb technicians neutralized a "hypergolic mixture" and an improvised explosive device containing an unknown substance, said James Yacone, an FBI special agent. There also were containers of accelerants, creating "an extremely dangerous environment," he said.

Oates said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that he had never seen a booby trap as elaborate as what was found in the apartment.

By late Saturday afternoon, all hazards had been removed from the apartment and residents in surrounding buildings were allowed to return home, police said.

The exception was Holmes' apartment building, where authorities were still collecting evidence. Authorities covered the windows of Holmes' apartment with black plastic to prevent anyone from seeing in. Before they did, a man in an ATF T-shirt could be seen measuring a poster on a closet that advertised a DVD called "Soldiers of Misfortune." The poster showed several figures in various positions playing paintball, some wearing masks.

Police left the apartment building carrying a laptop computer and a hard drive about 8 p.m. Saturday.

Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a Denver-area county detention facility, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and has been appointed a public defender.

President Barack Obama was scheduled to travel to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims. The city of Aurora planned a vigil to remember the dead and wounded in the shooting later in the evening.

Among the dead was a 6-year-old girl and a man who died on his 27th birthday and a day before his wedding anniversary. Families grieved and waited at hospitals, with police reporting 11 people still in critical condition as of Saturday.

While authorities continued to refuse to discuss a possible motive for one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, details about Holmes' background as a student and would-be scientist trickled out.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from the competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six pre-thesis Ph.D. students at its Neuroscience Program to be funded by a prestigious grant from the National Institutes of Health. The program of 35 students is dedicated to training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology, the university said in a statement.

In the first year of the five- to seven-year program, students take classes and complete three, three-month research rotations in the labs of different professors.

Professors who worked with him either did not return calls or declined to comment, saying police and university officials had told them not to speak to the media.

At one point in the year, Holmes was engaged in research about RNA and was to present a paper May 8 about RNA Biomarkers, according to a class schedule. It was unclear if he presented the paper.

Holmes recently took an intense, three-part oral exam that marks the end of the first year. Those who do well continue with their studies and shift to full-time research, while those who don't do well meet with advisers and discuss their options, including retaking the exam.

University officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns.

The university said Holmes gave no reason for his withdrawal, a decision he made in June.

"The focus of the program is on training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology," the university said. The doctoral program usually takes five to seven years to complete, it said.

Holmes was not allowed access from the institution after his withdrawal, which was "standard operating procedure" because he was no longer affiliated with the school, Montgomery said. Holmes had no contact with university police, she said.

In a resume posted on Monster.com, Holmes listed himself as an "aspiring scientist" and said he was looking for a job as a laboratory technician.

The resume, first obtained in Holmes' home state of California by The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, paints a picture of a brilliant young man brimming with potential: He worked as a summer intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla in 2006 and mapped the neurons of Zebra finches and studied the flight muscles of hummingbirds while an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside.

He also worked as a cabin counselor to underprivileged children at a summer camp in Los Angeles in 2008. In a statement, Camp Max Straus confirmed Holmes had worked there for eight weeks. The camp provided no other details about Holmes but said such counselors are generally responsible for the care and guidance of roughly 10 children.

Ritchie Duong, a friend who has known Holmes for more than a decade, told the Los Angeles Times that in high school he liked to play cards and video games. They both attended undergraduate school at the University of California, Riverside, where they saw each other once a week to watch the TV show "Lost."

Duong last saw Holmes in December when they met for dinner in Los Angeles and saw a movie together. His friend seemed fine, he told the newspaper.

Academics came easily to Holmes both at high school and at the UC Riverside, Duong said.

"I had one college class with him, and he didn't even have to take notes or anything. He would just show up to class, sit there, and around test time he would always get an 'A,'" said Duong, 24.

During the attack early Friday, Holmes used the military-style semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers, Oates said. Holmes had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the past two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The semiautomatic assault rifle used by the gunman jammed during the attack, a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press, which forced the shooter to switch to another gun with less fire power.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to in order to discuss the investigation, said the disabled weapon had a high-capacity ammunition magazine. Police have said that a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene and that such a device would be able to fire 50 to 60 rounds a minute.

Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over $300 on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company.

Chad Weinman, CEO of TacticalGear.com, said his company processes thousands of orders each day, and there was nothing unusual in the one that Holmes placed.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in the midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75 million on that day as a whole. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second-highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Across the street from the movie theater, a man who placed 15 crosses near Columbine High School after a 1999 massacre there has returned to Colorado with 12 crosses for the victims of Friday's shooting.

Greg Zanis, of Aurora, Ill., began putting up the 3 1/2-foot-tall crosses Sunday on a hill across the street from the Century 16 theater.
