At this point, there's a glut of Wi-Fi-equipped, 3D-capable Blu-ray players available for around $150. As a result, the otherwise solid Toshiba BDX5300 is lost in the crowd. This $139.99 (direct) Blu-ray player is affordable and full-featured, but its few outputs and cheap-feeling remote leave it behind similarly priced competitors.

Design
The BDX5300 is attractive, if simply designed. At 1.4 by 17.2 by 7.4 inches (HWD) and just 2.4 pounds, it's one of the slimmest Blu-ray players we've seen yet. The front has a black rectangular faceplate with a silver triangular "chin" under it, which makes it look slightly more interesting than the plain black front panels other Blu-ray players have. There are Eject, Stop, Play, and Power touch-sensitive buttons and a four-character alphanumeric LED display, all of which glow blue. A USB port sits on the right edge of the faceplate, and the disc tray itself is a slim rectangle that's barely larger than a Blu-ray-sized slot.

Besides the power cable, the only connections on the back of the player are an HDMI output, a coaxial audio output, and an Ethernet port. The lack of composite video and analog audio outputs is surprising, even if HDMI is the preferred connection choice. The one front USB port means if you want to watch BD-Live special features, which require external storage since the player doesn't have any onboard, you'll need to keep a USB flash drive sticking out of the front of the device.

The 7.5-inch remote is cheap and simple. The buttons are oblong and circular rubber nubs clustered around a small directional pad. The remote is not illuminated. A dedicated Netflix button lets you access the service through the Blu-ray player quickly. Otherwise, you get the standard red, green, yellow, and blue color buttons with context sensitive functions, along with Subtitle, Audio, Second Audio, Angle, A-B, Repeat, Display, and Connected buttons that cue up other playback and online features.

The BDX5300 accesses online services over Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet connection. The different services are arranged in Music, Video, Photo, and Other categories. They include Pandora (currently the only service in the Music category), Picasa (currently the only service in the Photo category), Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, YouTube, CinemaNow, and Vudu Apps (currently the only service in the Other category, but including a wide selection of apps through the service).

Performance
The player is relatively fast, but in a strange way. Typically, Blu-ray discs without BD-Live features load much faster than discs with BD-Live features. It's the other way around for the BDX5300. Our non-BD-Live test disc, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards 35th Anniversary Edition, loaded in an average of 30.1 seconds. Our BD-Live test disc, The Sitter, loaded in an average of 23.6 seconds, over six seconds faster. Our Editors' Choice LG BP620 ($149.99, 4 stars), by contrast, loaded a non-BD-Live test disc (Robocop) in an average of 21.2 seconds and a BD-Live test disc (The Big Lebowski) in an average of 32.9 seconds. The Panasonic DMP-BDT110 ($134.99, 4 stars) remains the resident speed demon, loading a non-BD-Live test disc in 12.6 seconds and a BD-Live test disc (again, Robocop and The Big Lebowski) in 19.7 seconds. The BDX5300 is speedy for BD-Live discs, but it's just too sluggish for discs that don't have online features. And even though the discs loaded relatively quickly, the overall interface of the BDX5300 felt sluggish to begin with, with tasks like ejecting discs and navigating menus taking just a second too long.

We test video processing with the HQV Blu-ray disc. The BDX5300 handled all motion tasks very well, showing excellent motion tracking at both 30 frames per second video and 24 frames per second film footage. Horizontal motion showed some slight tearing, but it was negligible compared to other Blu-ray players we've tested.

DVD upconversion looks solid but otherwise unremarkable on the BDX5300. In the DVR version of The Sitter, the 20th Century Fox logo appeared relatively crisp and clear. When the actual movie started, noticeable noise in dark scenes appeared and edges looked predictably soft, but the movie remained very watchable. Since you're dealing with 480p resolution source material on DVDs, you can only improve the footage so much, and it simply won't look as good as Blu-ray or other high definition media.

The Toshiba BDX5300 is a solid, relatively fast Blu-ray player, but it does nothing to stand out against other, similarly-priced players. Its remote feels cheap and its few connections limit your options in connecting it to your home theater, and it doesn't offer quite the performance and options of the LG BP620, either. If you can find the BDX5300 on sale, it's a worthy choice, but otherwise you should consider other options.

If you're feeling hot this week, it's not a mirage. From Montana to Louisiana, hundreds of heat records have been slashed as harrowing temperatures leave cornfields parched and city sidewalks sizzling.

On Tuesday 251 new daily high temperature records were set, boosting to 1,015 the number of records set in the past seven days.

The consequences range from comical ? a bacon-fried driveway in Oklahoma ? to catastrophic, as wildfires consuming parts of the Rocky Mountains are fueled by oppressive heat and gusty winds.

The record-breaking numbers might seem big, but they're hard to put into context ? the National Climatic Data Center has only been tracking the daily numbers broken for a little more than a year, said Derek Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the center.

Still, it's impressive, given that records usually aren't broken until the scorching months of July and August.

"Any time you're breaking all-time records in mid- to late-June, that's a healthy heat wave," Arndt said.

And if forecasts hold, more records could fall in the coming days in the central and western parts of the country and extend to the East Coast through the weekend.

Though it's been a week that could fry a person's soul ? and their soles and hands, really anything exposed to the relentless sun ? no matter where you are, the objective is the same: stay cool.

HIGH STAKES, HIGH TEMPS

All bets are off at the famed thoroughbred racetrack Churchill Downs during the heat wave ? at least they will be Thursday.

The Louisville, Ky., venue canceled its racing card as meteorologists predicted temperatures would touch at least 100 degrees. Track spokesman Darren Rogers said he thinks it's the first time the home of the Kentucky Derby has canceled racing due to extreme heat.

Longtime horse trainer Dale Romans has seen the toll that sweltering temperatures can take on the animals.

"I've seen horses have heat strokes, and it's not a pretty sight," the veteran Kentucky trainer said Wednesday.

Romans said he thinks most of the horses and humans could handle the heat, but it's not worth the risk, especially when the dirt track soaks up the sun's heat.

"These are professional athletes," he said. "They're exerting all their energy, and everybody knows how tough it is to get that hot. Some of the horses just can't cool down fast enough afterward."

PRAYING FOR RAIN

On the treeless, wind-swept Kansas prairie, the searing mix of sun and triple-digit heat is a recipe for agricultural disaster.

Some residents have taken to praying for rain and cooler temperatures in the sparsely populated western part of the state. Menlo farmer Brian Baalman can testify to that.

"Everybody is just sick of it. They just wish we would get a good rain," he said. "It has become a point to pray for it at church on Sunday, for sure."

Temperatures in the area have hovered around 111 degrees or higher for the past four days. Hill City, about 50 miles from Menlo, reached 115 on Tuesday and Wednesday ? earning it the distinction of the nation's hottest spot, according to the National Weather Service.

Much of the fortunes in the Menlo area are tied to corn, whose crop yields contribute not only to food but also ethanol-blended gasoline. But day after unyielding day of blazing sun and high heat have baked the top six inches of soil, and plant roots can't break through to the moister soil below.

Growing corn in these hot and windy conditions, Baalman said, is impossible.

"It is getting to look ugly, the longer this keeps going on without a drink," Baalman said.

EVENING FIREFIGHTING

Wildfires pack intense heat, but soaring temperatures and whipping winds are piling the pressure on the men and women battling the blazes raging across the Rocky Mountains.

U.S. Forest Service firefighter Owen Johnson had to work overnight and avoided the piping-hot daytime temperatures in the region, which toppled records in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. On Tuesday, Colorado Springs reached 101 degrees, and Miles City in eastern Montana soared to 111 degrees, the highest ever recorded in that area.

A call came in after Johnson's regular shift Monday in the Helena National Forest in Montana. A wildfire was racing through the Scratchgravel Hills, threatening at least 200 homes. But firefighters had to wait to attack the flames until midnight when the temperatures cooled and the wind died down.

On Tuesday morning, Johnson figured he had worked more than 24 hours, and probably wouldn't quit until the sun went down.

His sweaty hands gripping a banana and a cup of coffee, he gave a tired shrug when asked to compare this fire to others in his 13-year career.

"Every fire's different," he said. "They all pose their own risks and challenges."

EVERYTHING'S BETTER WITH BACON

Aaron Anderson and his 4-year-old son bypassed the timeworn trick of cooking an egg on the baking sidewalk Tuesday, opting instead to fry bacon on their driveway in Coweta, Okla.

Anderson's thermometer read 105 degrees around 4:30 p.m., about the same time his son, Aaron Paul, said it felt like his feet were cooking.

Sky-high temperatures aren't unusual in this part of the country, but it is warm enough this week that five records were set on Tuesday.

Anderson preheated the skillet for 10 minutes in the sun before throwing on the bacon.

It took an hour for the meat to fully cook. And, yes, they ate it.

"My only regret is it was turkey bacon instead of pork bacon, but that's all we had," Anderson said.

SWEATERS NEEDED IN SEATTLE

In the northern corners of the United States, the weather was the opposite of infernal.

It looks like March, not June, in Seattle. People are clad in coats and scarves, using umbrellas to shield themselves ? not from the bright sun but raindrops.

Tuesday was more than 10 degrees colder than usual, with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees.

Patty Carlson didn't think she'd need a sweater, but there she was, ordering a latte at a downtown espresso shop on Tuesday.

"Take a look around the street," the 30-year Seattle resident said. "Would you guess it's June?"

Meanwhile, New England kicked off summer with 90-degree heat and high temperatures in Vermont and Maine.

But as Mark Twain famously summed up the region's fickle weather, "If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes."

Last weekend, a summertime nor'easter, flooding and thunderstorms knocked temps down across much of New England, and temperatures dropped to the 60s in some parts Tuesday and Wednesday.

The yo-yo effect was felt at Ben and Jerry's ice cream stand in Freeport, Maine. One day, customers' ice cream was melting faster than they could eat it. The next, customers trickled away.

Co-manager Carey Lockard has heard Twain's musings; customers often show up at the stand, his words on their tongues.

"It's amazing ? the weather in Maine," she said.

Diet of early human relative Australopithecus shows surprises, says Texas A&M researcher

Australopithecus sediba, believed to be an early relative of modern-day humans, enjoyed a diet of leaves, fruits, nuts, and bark, which meant they probably lived in a more wooded environment than is generally thought, a surprising find published in the current issue of Nature magazine by an international team of researchers that includes a Texas A&M University anthropologist.

Darryl de Ruiter, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, says the new findings are in contrast to previously documented diets of other hominin species and suggests that Australopithecus sediba had a different living environment than other hominins in the region. Previous research had shown that the australopiths of South Africa lived in the vicinity of grassy and open savannah-like areas, though it was unclear whether they actually occupied a savannah habitat, or if they lived in forested margins near the grasslands.

The team examined teeth from skeletal remains of a group of newly discovered hominins found several years ago in a South African cave about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg and dated to about 1.98 million years old. The team, comprised of researchers from the United States, Africa, Europe and Australia, named the new species Australopithecus sediba and demonstrated that it displayed a mosaic of both human-like and ape-like characteristics shared both with other forms of Australopithecus and with modern-day humans.

"By examining material recovered from their teeth using diverse tools ranging from dental picks and laser ablation devices, we were able to determine precisely what they were eating," de Ruiter explains.

Australopithecus sediba, believed to be an early relative of modern-day humans, enjoyed a diet of leaves, fruits, nuts, and bark, which meant they probably lived in a more wooded environment than is generally thought, a surprising find published in the current issue of Nature magazine by an international team of researchers that includes a Texas A&M University anthropologist.

Darryl de Ruiter, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, says the new findings are in contrast to previously documented diets of other hominin species and suggests that Australopithecus sediba had a different living environment than other hominins in the region. Previous research had shown that the australopiths of South Africa lived in the vicinity of grassy and open savannah-like areas, though it was unclear whether they actually occupied a savannah habitat, or if they lived in forested margins near the grasslands.

The team examined teeth from skeletal remains of a group of newly discovered hominins found several years ago in a South African cave about 30 miles northwest of Johannesburg and dated to about 1.98 million years old. The team, comprised of researchers from the United States, Africa, Europe and Australia, named the new species Australopithecus sediba and demonstrated that it displayed a mosaic of both human-like and ape-like characteristics shared both with other forms of Australopithecus and with modern-day humans.

"By examining material recovered from their teeth using diverse tools ranging from dental picks and laser ablation devices, we were able to determine precisely what they were eating," de Ruiter explains.

"This gives us a very clear picture of their diet, and it was surprising. It shows that they ate more fruits and leaves than any other hominin fossil ever examined, more like what a chimp might eat. CHICAGO (AP) - Daniel Murphy homered twice, Scott Hairston hit a grand slam and David Wright drove in five runs to lead the New York Mets to a 17-1 rout of the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

Ike Davis had a three-run homer and an RBI double as he combined with Murphy, Hairston and Wright to drive in all 17 runs - with each having at least four RBIs - to help the Mets snap a four-game losing streak.

The Mets had their highest scoring total since they had 18 at Wrigley Field on Sept. 5, 2010. It was also the most runs the Cubs have allowed since that game.

Murphy hadn't homered since last July 16 but went deep in consecutive innings to notch his first career multihomer game. Davis' four RBIs matched his career high and Hairston had his second career grand slam.

One night after having a 15-game hitting streak snapped, Wright had a sacrifice fly, two-run double and two-run single for his ninth career game of five or more RBIs.

The onslaught made for an easy afternoon for Mets starter Jonathon Niese (6-3), who struck out six and held the Cubs to one run over seven innings. Niese improved to 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA in day games this season.

The Mets' first seven hits went for extra bases, six of them off Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija (5-7). Samardzija also walked four batters and gave up a career-high nine runs in 4 1-3 innings.

He dropped to 0-4 with an 11.29 over his last four starts after going 3-2 with a 2.26 ERA in eight starts from April 24 to June 4.

Casey Coleman fared no better in relief, allowing seven runs in 1 2-3 innings.

The game was tied 1-all through three before New York got 15 runs in the middle innings.

Davis' RBI double and Murphy's two-run homer highlighted a three-run fourth. Davis capped the six-run fifth with a three-run homer, then Hairston's grand slam in the sixth gave New York another six-run inning.

Davis added an eighth-inning double as his last seven hits have gone for extra bases.

One night after stranding 12 runners in a 5-3 loss to Chicago, New York left just three runners on base despite getting 16 hits and drawing seven walks.

Lead an acute threat to California condor population, study says

Field biologist Joe Burnett was standing at the base of a tree in Big Sur when the giant, limp body of a California condor landed at his feet.

Even before his team learned the official cause of death, they knew it was lead poisoning from the telltale signs they'd seen earlier in the bird, such as weight loss and erratic behavior.

"What happens to the condors as a result of lead poisoning ? it's not pretty," said Burnett, who tracks California condors around the state for the Ventana Wildlife Society.

Lead threatens all of the state's condors, according to a new study by Burnett and colleagues that was published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Of the 150 free-flying condors in California during the period of the study, one in three had some amount of lead poisoning and one in five was severely poisoned each year, requiring intensive lead-removal treatments if the birds were to survive.

The study also provided evidence that the main source of the poison is lead bullets from hunters that are left behind in animal carcasses, which the birds eat.

For years, wildlife experts have called lead from ammunition a major threat to condors. But the new research shows how dangerous the toxic metal is to the future of the species, the authors said.

"The levels of lead are completely mind-boggling," said Donald Smith, an environmental toxicologist at UC Santa Cruz and senior author on the study. "Usually, in people, if we see an incidence of 1% we call it an epidemic ? and this is 20%."

The California condor exists today only because of a series of remarkable interventions by conservationists.

The huge bird, which has a 9-foot wingspan and will fly 160 miles in a day to satisfy its hunger for rotting meat, once numbered more than 500 in the southwestern U.S. alone. By 1982, its population had plummeted to 22 due to lead poisoning, poaching and habitat destruction.

In 1987, all the remaining wild birds were captured for breeding and, five years later, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began a program to release them back into the wild. Today there are more than 400 California condors, about half of which are flying free over California, Arizona and Mexico.

For many observers, this turnaround is a triumph of conservation. But that recovery is deceptive, the study authors said; it persists only because of intensive management of the birds.

Field biologists track the condors daily, and each is captured biannually for a thorough exam and blood tests. Often, Smith said, those tests turn up lead and the animals are then sent to the Los Angeles Zoo for a heavy-metal-removal treatment called chelation.

For years, researchers have been building a case that lead ammunition is poisoning the condors. The issue has pitted conservationists against hunters' rights groups such as the National Rifle Assn., which calls the connection "unfounded" on its website and has fought attempts to remove lead from ammunition. The NRA did not return a request for comment for this story.

In the new study, however, the authors said they connected the dots definitively.

The researchers collected the blood of every wild condor in California twice a year from 1997 to 2010. They analyzed the blood's lead content through a technique called stable isotopic analysis, which allowed them to determine whether the lead in the birds had the same mix of lead isotopes as the lead used in ammunition, compared with other potential sources such as paint.

The lead in the condors matched the bullets in all but nine of the 110 birds.

"This report really strengthens the case for bullets being the source," said J. Michael Scott, a zoologist at the University of Idaho in Moscow, who was not involved in the study.

A California state ban on lead ammunition in big-game hunting within the condor's habitat went into effect in 2008, largely due to efforts of condor conservationists.

But the ban left the use of lead ammunition in other types of hunting intact. And it had little effect on lead levels in the California condor population, the study found.

Environmental groups are now pushing for a complete ban on lead ammunition across the country. Earlier this month, seven conservation groups filed suit to force the Environmental Protection Agency to determine whether it has the authority to ban lead in ammunition.

Such a ban is feasible because most manufacturers now make copper bullets as well as lead ones, and those pose no risk to the birds, Smith said, adding: "There's just no reason to use lead-based ammunition anymore."

Myra Finkelstein, a toxicologist at UC Santa Cruz and the lead author on the study, said that without a broader ban the odds remain too high that condors will encounter lead-tainted food. If only one out of 100 carcasses has lead in it, each condor has a nearly one-in-two chance of being poisoned every year, according to the study's statistical analysis of feeding patterns.

"It only takes one exposure to poison a condor," Finkelstein said.

Smith said that despite the serious difficulties conservationists have had rehabilitating the California condor population, there are reasons to work hard to preserve the bird ? not least the outsize role the bird plays in the public imagination.

But for Scott, the findings raise questions about the future of endangered-species management. There is a finite amount of money available to save endangered creatures, he said, and the condor is just one of more than 900 animals on the federal Endangered Species List that require active management to ensure their survival.

"If we were to walk away from the condor, it would quickly go extinct," he said. "So how long do we want to do this for ? and what's the cost to other endangered species?"

That aside, the main feature that sets the Transformer Prime apart is that it can be attached to an optional keyboard dock. When docked, the keyboard and tablet fold up like a traditional netbook. ASUS also throws in a few extras like a cloud storage system and an eBook reader. The tablet runs on Honeycomb (Android 3.0) with an anticipated upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) and has full access to the Android Market.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus

For those who don't want a large tablet and don't want to make a lot of hardware sacrifices, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus is a great choice. The Tab 7 Plus ships with a modified version of? Honeycomb with a planned Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Like the Transformer Prime and Xoom, you can use Google apps like Gmail, Google+, and YouTube and have full access to the Android Market. Samsung Galaxy Tabs also allow you to purchase apps through the Amazon Market, Samsung's separate store, or any other third-party app market. You can even run the Kindle and Nook apps on your Galaxy Tab for access to both bookstores at once.

The Galaxy Tab 7 Plus offers front and rear facing cameras, though at lower resolution than the Xoom or Transformer Prime, The Tab also features Bluetooth, GPS, and other features supported by standard Android tablets. Barns & Noble Nook Tablet

The Nook Tablet is an updated version of the popular Nook Color. It's predecessor became popular for hackers looking for a cheap Android tablet to modify. Like the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet uses a customized version of Android that doesn't run Google apps. The Nook Tablet runs apps purchased from the separate Nook app store. It's meant to be a simple device without extra features like cameras, Bluetooth or GPS, but it does sport a slot for expanded memory through micro SD cards.?

Unlike the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet has had longer to perfect their custom Android interface and features better parental controls. However, Barns & Noble has not been as successful in recruiting exclusive book deals or app developers, and Barns & Noble does not directly sell digital videos or music. They do support a variety of third-party apps, such as Netflix and Hulu+, but so does Amazon.

The Nook Tablet initially $50 more than the Kindle Fire for a tablet of similar size and processing speed, but they've since released a $199 8GB model. The Nook has a better screen, hard volume buttons, expandable memory, and a microphone, but a lot of the choice may just depend on where you prefer to shop for content.?

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire is Amazon's answer to the Nook Color and was release around the same time as the Nook Tablet. The Kindle Fire has the primary advantage of being one of the most inexpensive Android tablets on the market, which was partially achieved by selling it as a loss leader. It's sparked speculation and interest in low cost Android tablets, and it's undoubtedly the reason Barns & Noble recently lowered the price on the Nook to match that of the Kindle Fire. The Fire sacrifices many hardware niceties to keep the price down, including hard volume buttons, cameras, expandable memory, Bluetooth, GPS, and microphones. You won't find any of those in a Kindle Fire, and like the Nook, it is available in Wi-Fi only. There is no option for free cellular data plans as there are for other versions of the Kindle eReader.

The hardware sacrifices don't seem to have made a difference for Kindle fans who are delighted by an inexpensive device they can use to consume Amazon content. Amazon also promotes their device and separate Amazon App Store by offering daily app specials for all users and special streaming content for Amazon Prime subscribers.

The Motorola Xoom was the first Android Honeycomb tablet to launch, and one of the few to sport an unmodified version of Android. Users were the first go get beta invitations to Google Music.
