Four biggest moments from ?The Ultimate Fighter?

Last week's "The Ultimate Fighter" knockout was memorable, so how do you try to top that? A rap battle, some blood and a hospital gown.

Adam Cella still in his hospital gown. Fresh off last week's stunning knockout by Uriah Hall, Cella returned to the TUF house still wearing his hospital gown. He was not seriously injured, but did have to go over the details of the fight with teammates to know exactly what happened. He also nearly joined Hall in the shower to congratulate him.

Rap battle? Rap battle. Gilbert Smith made fun of Kevin Casey for his rapping, specifically this video.

This turned into a rap battle with several fighters participating, and Casey emerging as the clear winner.

Don't mess with people's sleep. When power went out at the TUF house, Team Sonnen thought it would be a good idea to run into Collin Hart's room and throw toilet paper at him as he slept. No, I don't get it, either. But with Hart preparing to meet Casey, he did not want his sleep messed with. Hart was so heated about it that he put up his middle finger during the post-weigh in staredown.

Hart breaks Casey. In a bloody battle, Hart starts with a jumping kick and follows it with a takedown. From there, Hart controls the entire fight. UFC president Dana White is impressed, saying, "It's almost like he broke him." Hart takes the fight 20-18 on every card.

With Hart's win, Team Jones wrested away control from Team Sonnen. The next bout is Bubba McDaniels and Kelvin Gastelum. What did you think of this week's episode? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Chuck Hagel, President Obama's choice for defense secretary, testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing, on Capitol Hill in Washington. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. said Friday he will press ahead with a vote on Hagel?s nomination to be defense secretary, rejecting Republicans demands for more financial information from President Barack Obama?s choice as setting an unprecedented new standard. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked the nomination of former GOP senator Chuck Hagel as the nation's next defense secretary over unrelated questions about President Barack Obama's actions in the aftermath of the deadly raid on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya. Obama accused Republicans of playing politics with national security during wartime, and Democrats vowed to revive the nomination after Congress' weeklong break.

By 58-40, with one abstention, the Senate fell short of the 60-vote threshold required to advance Hagel's nomination to a final, up-or-down vote on his confirmation. Four Republicans voted with Democrats to end the debate and proceed to a final vote: Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Mike Johanns of Nebraska.

Obama reacted immediately, hammering Republicans for an unprecedented filibuster of a nominee for defense secretary and insisting that Hagel ? a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran ? will eventually win confirmation. He would succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is stepping down after four years as CIA director and Pentagon chief.

"It's just unfortunate that this kind of politics intrudes at a time when I'm still presiding over a war in Afghanistan and I need a secretary of defense who is coordinating with our allies to make sure that our troops are getting the kind of strategy and mission that they deserve," the president said in an online chat sponsored by Google.

In the final minutes of the tally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., switched his vote from "yes" to "no," a procedural move that allows him to revive the nomination after the break. He set another vote for Feb. 26.

"Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, it gets worse," the Democratic leader lamented of the chamber's bitter partisanship.

The successful Republican effort to block a vote on Hagel leaves one of the most contentious nominations of the Obama presidency in limbo, although Republicans signaled that they would relent and allow a simple majority vote on Hagel when they return from their recess.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., voted against ending debate. But he said that he expects to change his vote, and he believes many of his GOP colleagues will do the same.

"I'm confident that after a reasonable period of time I'm going to vote to end the debate so that we can have an up-or-down vote on Chuck Hagel," Alexander said. "I suspect there will be a large number of Republican senators who also do that."

Echoing a complaint by other Republicans, Alexander called Thursday's vote "unfortunate" and "unnecessary" because Hagel's nomination came up on the Senate floor too quickly ? just two days after it was approved by a bitterly divided Armed Services Committee.

Still, a week without any resolution and the possibility of any surprises are the last things any White House wants for its nominees. Hagel's nomination has been unusual, facing a well-funded opposition that has unleashed a barrage of criticism in campaign-style television and print ads. Hagel has faced intense opposition from Republicans, who have challenged his past statements and votes on Israel, Iran, Iraq and nuclear weapons.

At least one group insisted shortly after the vote that it would redouble its efforts to defeat Obama's choice.

"The Emergency Committee for Israel will continue to work to convince a majority of senators of the undeniable truth that we can do much, much better than Mr. Hagel," William Kristol, chairman of the group said in a statement.

The vote on Hagel combined with the delay on CIA Director-designate John Brennan's nomination puts Republicans in a tough position as Democrats are certain to cast them as filibustering two critical members of the Obama's second-term national security team.

"Today's vote to filibuster Chuck Hagel's nomination by Republicans is a disgrace, and the GOP is now holding America's security and its troops hostage," said Jon Soltz, an Iraq war veteran and chairman of VoteVets.org.

Republicans, led by Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, had been blocking the confirmation of their former colleague until they received information from the White House on when Obama contacted Libyan officials after the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi last September in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The White House responded to questions about Benghazi by saying former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf on Obama's behalf on Sept. 11, the day of the attack, to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya. White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler said Obama spoke to Magariaf on the evening of Sept. 12.

The Obama administration also had disclosed the calls at the time they were made.

Reid said it was "shocking" and "tragic" that the GOP would attempt to block Hagel's nomination at a time when the U.S. military is engaged in so many places around the world. "Not a single nominee for secretary of defense ever in the history of our country has been filibustered," he said in a speech on the Senate floor.

In the nation's history of hundreds of Cabinet nominees, the Senate has only rejected nine nominees and 21 were withdrawn or no action was taken, according to Senate historian Donald Ritchie. On just two occasions has the Senate imposed a 60-vote threshold for a Cabinet nominee. Neither was the president's pick for defense secretary.

A full Senate vote on Hagel had been expected Friday after Reid filed a motion to limit debate. While Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote, they needed the support of five Republicans to clear the way for a majority vote. In the end, they only got four.

Graham had said Wednesday he would vote against ending debate on Hagel's nomination.

"There seems to not be much interest to hold this president accountable for a national security breakdown that led to the first ambassador being killed in the line of duty in over 30 years," Graham said. "No, the debate on Chuck Hagel is not over. It has not been serious. We don't have the information we need. And I'm going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through until we get answers about what the president did personally when it came to the Benghazi debacle."

The Senate Intelligence Committee is pushing off a vote on Brennan amid demands that the White House turn over more details about drone strikes against terror suspects and about the Benghazi attacks. Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein of California said a vote likely will be postponed until late February.

The Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to approve Hagel by a 14-11 vote, with all the panel's Democrats backing him. The committee's Republicans were unified in opposition to their onetime colleague.

If ultimately confirmed by the Senate, Hagel, 66, would take charge of the U.S. armed forces at a time of turmoil. Automatic cuts to the Pentagon's budget are looming, American troops in Afghanistan are being halved over the next year, North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon, Iran remains a threat in the Persian Gulf region, and Syria, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Mali and Tunisia all are in a state of unrest.

At a Pentagon award ceremony on Thursday for Clinton, Panetta said it was fitting to recognize her accomplishments as secretary of state on Valentine's Day. And he said the second-best Valentine's Day present would be for the Senate to confirm Hagel and allow Panetta and his wife to "get the hell out of town." He said he's got his belongings packed.

Republicans accused Democrats of setting up a test vote Thursday that they knew would fail so the president's allies could paint Republicans as obstructionists during the Presidents Day break.

"We could have worked this out," said Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.

Dognition unlocks mysteries of your dog?s mind

Dognition

Duke neuroscientist Brian Hare tests a dog's cognition using a simple set of toys.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Is your dog an Einstein or a Charmer? For $60 (woof!!), a new business venture called Dognition will help you put your pooch through a series of fun playtime activities to find out how your dog thinks. The metrics generated by those experiments ? I mean, fun playtime activities ? are being fed into a research project that could for the first time determine?how the cognitive traits of various breeds differ.

"Dognition.com is ultimately about people's dogs, and finding out about your dog," Duke University neuroscientist Brian Hare, one of the venture's co-founders, told NBC News. "That's what you're paying for. I buy fancy dog food for my dog, and just like I want to take care of his stomach, I want to take care of his mind, too. Skip the next couple of chew toys, and your dog and you will really enjoy doing something a little different."

The business venture builds on Hare's work as the director of the Duke Canine Cognition Center and an associate professor in evolutionary anthropology at Duke's Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. It also meshes with a newly published book by Hare and his wife, Vanessa Woods, titled "The Genius of Dogs."

?

How smart are dogs?
Don't expect Dognition's cognitive assessment to measure your pet's IQ: Hare says a dog's intelligence can't be described with a single number. (Come to think of it, the same caveat should apply to humans.)

"Because we use standardized testing in all walks of life, it leads you to believe that there's just one measure of intelligence, and there's a number, and that's it," Hare said. "But when you start studying cognitive science, and look at other species, that all starts to crumble."

It's also fruitless to try calculating whether dogs are smarter than cats, or chimps, or bonobos. "That's like trying to answer the question, 'Is a hammer better than a screwdriver?'" Hare said. Instead, he and his colleagues look at how dogs and other species address problem-solving challenges and communicate with humans. It turns out that dogs are geniuses when it comes to figuring out what humans are trying to tell them ? which suggests that our world is truly going to the dogs.

"Dogs are bizarrely successful," Hare said. "They have more jobs than ever in this age of the Internet and the International Space Station."

Researchers have even argued that humans and dogs are locked in a co-evolutionary embrace that began tens of thousands of years ago. Last month, for example, one research team determined that canine digestive systems have adapted to the relatively starchy diet?served up by modern humans.

How it works
Hare's research into dog cognition began back in 1995, with studies of how dogs looked for hidden treats when humans tried giving them hints. Those experiments, which are done using simple household items such as plastic cups (plus tons of treats), are laid out in Dognition's Canine Assessment Toolkit.

After you plunk your money down, Dognition's website takes you through a personality questionnaire about your dog: For example, how excited does your dog get around other dogs, grown-ups, children? Do fireworks scare your pup? Then, Dognition guides you through a battery of tests that are as fun as playing fetch, or hide-and-seek. The results are uploaded to Dognition HQ, and you get back a detailed profile of your dog's mental habits, based on where Fido's performance ends up on a chart of independent vs. social problem-solving skills.

Different areas of the chart are associated with nine different canine archetypes: Ace, Stargazer, Maverick, Charmer, Socialite, Protodog, Einstein, Expert or Renaissance Dog. That can give you something to brag about on Dognition's Facebook page, but it also can shed new light on why dogs do the things they do, or how you can get through to them better. "We've got a bunch of really fantastic trainers who have signed up to help," Hare said.

Researchers get a reward as well: The data from hundreds of Canine Assessment Tests can be correlated with breed, age and other factors. "To collect the amount of data we've taken in during our month-long beta program would have taken us a couple of years," Hare said.

Eventually, Hare and his colleagues hope to map out the substantive cognitive differences between dog breeds?? differences that have not yet been studied scientifically. "The reason we don't know anything about breed differences is that we currently don't have the tools available to look at the number of dogs that would allow us to answer the interesting questions," Hare said.

Dognition could fix that. And it also could open up new possibilities for some of humanity's best friends.

"One of the things we're hoping to do is, suppose there's that dog that may not be the most attractive dog physically, but the dog is wonderfully behaved," Hare said. "What Dognition.com can do is help people understand more about what's inside that dog, and not just its physical appearance ??and see that, wow, this dog is amazing."

More about dog intelligence:

Dognition offers a $59.95 Canine Assessment Toolkit as well as a $129.95 annual membership bundle that includes enhanced games and other goodies.

Guys as i said before try to post every day or two. If you can't post for a while, be sure to at least tell us or PM me, and make sure your character is not going to stall others. (Making them wait for the remaining time you're away).

Try to type three good/decent paragraphs with detail. (Dialogue has its exceptions)

By exception for dialogue, I know it gets frustrating trying to reply to someone through dialogue and asking yourself how to work up three paragraphs for a easy question. Don't worry i understand that but at least be descriptive in your answers. Thats the least i can ask for when it comes to such answers but there are ways to length out your paragraph and thats by giving good visuals and inside thoughts.

When posting be sure to use the code

Code: Select all
NAME

At the beginning of the post, then continue your post as normal.

When describing someone your character may not know and you want to just describe the person as your character may see them to be. Please put the character your describing in paranthesis.

Ex. Medusa notices a small boy who held a lollipop in his mouth across the street (Kon). (Kon is someone i made up).

Another example is if your character is in thought. Just follow the same process. You should know if your character is thinking it, there should be " ".

When your in battle and say your beginning a ability. Be sure to describe how your character is doing the ability, the sounds one may hear if near, the environment effect it may have, etc.

Ex. Goku, begins screaming while crinching his fist. The pressure of wind increases around him as his aura intensifies. The earth begins to partially rise as his energy grow. Suddenly, his hair begins to brighten changing into a blonde color and his eyes go green. Suddenly his a explosions occurs and goku stands in anger looking towards Frieza (Super Saiyan).

(Wow... idk i feel like i explained that ok -- Goku's Supa Saiyan xD)

OK last thing I want to explain is changing areas. Know your character can't be in 2-3 different areas at once. Your character can only be in one area at a time. If through RP your character enters the Plenoran Castle. State it please.

So say you got done with your full text. At the end put (Has left to Plenoran)

this way people will know that your character no longer on this field.

Remember guys, if you have question do ask and i'll try to clear it up.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Beyonce is hoping that her ultra-revealing documentary will someday provide inspiration for Blue Ivy, the year-old daughter she and husband Jay-Z have.

"I hope that she will see all of the beautiful times (and) all the tough times that led up to her being here," the singer said Tuesday night at the New York premiere of her upcoming HBO documentary, "Life is But a Dream."

She added: "I'm hoping that ... it can comfort her and inspire her in her life when she needs it."

The autobiographical film takes a no-holds-barred look at the entertainer. It stems from personal conversations the 31-year old singer made using the video camera on her computer over the past couple of years. It also includes home movies of the Grammy-winning singer and her two sisters.

In the film, Beyonce candidly discusses personal matters like her miscarriage, reports of faking her pregnancy, and firing her father as her manager.

She claims the process of talking into a camera to get all her thoughts out was therapeutic.

"I really grew so much," she says of the process. "This movie has really been my therapy. I've healed from so many wounds and I've been able to understand why some of the things I've been through, why I went through, so feel really proud, and hopefully I can inspire other people."

The singer has been private about her life in the past. But she felt the time was right to let people know how she felt.

"I felt that after 16 years of being a public singer, people didn't know who I was," she admitted. But then she added: "I will always keep certain things to myself because it's only natural."

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise visit to the premiere, and posed with Beyonce on the red carpet. Before going into the Ziegfeld Theatre, Winfrey, known for her tough, results-driven interview style, was asked if this was the kind of story she would have done on Beyonce.

She said Beyonce did a "much better job" of telling her own story. "I wouldn't have been in the bedroom and in the closet and in the car and on vacation," she said.

Beyonce acted as the film's executive producer and co-directed it with Ed Burke. He previously worked on some of her video projects. "Life is But a Dream" airs Saturday on HBO.

Brazil rules Apple doesn't have exclusive rights to iPhone trademark

Android Central

It's a slightly bizarre feeling, but in Brazil, this Android smartphone is the iPhone. And, thanks to a ruling by Brazilian regulators, it can continue to be called the iPhone, as Apple has been ruled not to have exclusive rights to the trademark in the country. The key item involved in the dispute -- local company Gradiente registered the iPhone trademark there in 2000, some 7 years before the first Apple iPhone. Apple's argument centered on the fact that while the trademark may have been filed, Gradiente failed to release a handset under the moniker until 2012.

Speaking to the BBC, the Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) said they expect an appeal to the decision from Apple. They also went on to declare that the decision only applies to handsets, and that Apple still has exclusive rights to the iPhone term on clothing, in publications and in software. Apple can still sell the iPhone in Brazil, but as it stands Gradiente has the option to sue for exclusivity.

The iPhone Neo One is available for 599 reals ($304/£196.)

Heavy Rain creator details the difficulties of game engines and what he hopes the future holds

Heavy Rain's David Cage details the difficulties of game engines and how to solve them

Heavy Rain development studio Quantic Dream is notorious for long development times. The studio's also notorious for critically-loved games with strong cinematic cores, and games that often look very different from the competition. Part of that is game design, but another major piece of the puzzle is the engines driving those games -- each game that Quantic Dream makes is built in a unique game engine, which is both very expensive and very time-consuming. The studio's founder and lead, David Cage, explained as much to us in an interview at DICE 2013.

"Quantic Dream is a very special company in the sense that we do a lot of things that wouldn't make any sense in any other company. We haven't done any sequels so far, we work on new IPs each time. And we pretty much develop a new engine each time we develop a new game."

But Cage doesn't harbor much love for that last part -- the game engine bit. He says that his studio opted out of the current console generation's game engine of choice (Unreal Engine 3) because, "we work with Sony, [and] we want to create the best technology for the hardware and see how far we can go." As a result, even Cage's latest work (Beyond: Two Souls) is crafted in a new engine -- the same one used to build the Kara demo we saw last March -- intended to show off the PlayStation 3's late-generation graphical and processing chops. Yes, even with the next PlayStation (codenamed "Orbis") waiting in the wings, his second-party Sony studio is still showing off the aging PS3's prowess. Beyond: Two Souls is more than just a showpiece, of course, with Quantic Dream employing actress Ellen Page to motion performance-capture the game's main character, and the same emphasis on storytelling the studio's practiced previously. Still, Cage hopes for a future where technology isn't something he and his studio need be concerned with.

Health News - Widespread illicit drug use no surprise in win-at-all ...

by Julie Tullberg - ?Winning isn?t everything; it?s the only thing?. This win-at-all costs sports creed, adopted by the Americans, has now crept into the psyche of Australian sport.

Drugs in sport will continue to tarnish the reputation of sporting groups and their athletes ? such is their desire to be the best. The Lance Armstrong scandal has been a classic case. The consequences are lethal to sporting careers and reveal human failings that reflect the deadly sins ? greed and pride.?

We havee seen former Australian cyclists Matt White and Stephen Hodge dragged into the tour mess and they were promptly sacked. Are they scapegoats of an elaborate, complex plot that touched most riders of the cycling tour??

Something is rotten in the footy codes and this is a crisis. What percentage of footballers are playing on injections? And how often has organised crime infiltrated our sports in a bid to control results?

While sports scientists explore better ways to find the edge in sports performance, the reality is that drug use is an option to help athletes recover, and stimulate the growth and recovery of muscles for more power and sustained effort. There is no doubt that boundaries are pushed - all the time.

There will always be a temptation for sports managers ? and athletes ? to cut corners and this has been proven time and time again. While the Essendon drugs investigation has rocked the AFL and Australian sport, it highlights that Australian fans expect a clean contest.

Australian athletes take great pride in competing with integrity, after a long period of hard work, toughness and careful skill development. But how many are athletes blind to illegal practices? How many are being injected illegally or taking substances orally without their knowledge?

We have seen many success stories at international-level sport, plus AFL, where athletes have shown an amazing level of work ethic to achieve great results. There are clean Australian athletes - I know that for sure, during my time working in sports science and journalism.

Australians deplore cheating. In fact, fans are critical of elite athletes when they are proven to be drug cheats. This has infuriated clean Aussies at Olympic and world championship level, who have been vocal opponents of drug cheats while they toil for a taste of glory through legitimate methods.

But the sad reality is drugs have become part-and-parcel of sport because of the status (and the waiting gold pot) of winning. It is no surprise that drugs, used for hormone replacement and to improve recovery and soreness, have been used in the AFL. Why??

Try running half a marathon every week on the footy field, while getting knocked from pillar to post, and then getting up again each week, displaying flashes of brilliance. It?s what is expected of these athletes who play the most demanding sport in the world.

The physical and mental strain these footballers carry is something that spectators don?t fathom - only if they walk in their shoes. The mental and physical trauma of elite sport is hidden and this is why the issues become major problems. Ask any broken AFL player how tough it is ? and he will reveal the depth of his pain. It?s no surprise that illicit drug use is widespread in our own backyard.

Julie Tullberg is a PhD candidate and teaches sports journalism at Monash University.

Cardinal linked to Los Angeles abuse cover-up to take part in papal selection

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A former Los Angeles Catholic archbishop who was stripped of all public duties after being linked to efforts to conceal child sex abuse by priests said on Monday he planned to participate in the process to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI.

The announcement by Cardinal Roger Mahony, which angered a prominent victims support group, came less than two weeks after 12,000 pages of church files unsealed under court order showed Mahony worked to send priests accused of abuse out of state to shield known abusers from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s.

"I look forward to traveling to Rome soon to help thank Pope Benedict XVI for his gifted service to the Church, and to participate in the Conclave to elect his successor," Mahoney, 76, said in a statement released on Monday by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Benedict surprised the world's Catholics earlier in the day by announcing his plan to retire at the end of this month.

All cardinals under 80 years old are eligible to enter a conclave to choose the next pope. Mahony, who has been a cardinal since 1991, participated in the 2005 conclave that elected Benedict as the successor to Pope John Paul II.

Mahony's successor as archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, removed him last month from all public and administrative duties following the release of the documents. Mahoney's former top aide, Thomas Curry, also stepped down as bishop of Santa Barbara.

Mahony, who was archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 until 2011, has apologized for "mistakes" he made as archbishop, saying he had not been equipped to deal with the problem of sexual misconduct involving children.

Joelle Casteix, western regional director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said she was concerned that it was not in Mahony's best interest to "elect anyone who will punish wrongdoers and take child molesters out of ministry.

"We fear that anyone that he votes for will only continue this shameful cover-up of child sexual abuse," she added.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles was not immediately available to comment on the group's concerns.

The Los Angeles archdiocese, which serves 4 million Catholics, reached a $660 million civil settlement in 2007 with more than 500 victims of child molestation in the biggest such agreement of its kind in the nation.

Mahony at the time called the abuse "a terrible sin and crime."

How to Say Anything to Anyone: A Guide to Building Business ...

We all know how it feels when our colleagues talk about us but not to us. It's frustrating, and it creates tension. When candor is missing in the workplace, employees feel like they're working in the dark. Leaders don't know what employees really think; managers are frustrated when outcomes are not what they expect; and employees often don't know where they stand performance-wise.Many of us remain passive against broken, indirect communication habits, hoping that things will miraculously improve?but they won't. Not without skills and effort.

The people you work with can work with you, around you, or against you. How people work with you depends on the relationships you cultivate. Do your colleagues trust you? Can they speak openly to you when projects and tasks go awry?

Take charge of your career by taking charge of your business relationships. Make your work environment less tense and more productive by practicing direct communication. Set relationship expectations, work with people how they like to work, and give and receive regular feedback.

In How to Say Anything to Anyone, you'll learn how to:

- Ask for what you want at work
- Improve all types of working relationships
- Reduce the gossip and drama in your office
- Tell people when you re frustrated in a way that resonates
- Take action on your ideas and feelings

New England Pond Hockey Classic and the Great Rotary Fishing ...

Post written by Frank Roche, President, Roche Realty Group, Inc.

Lake Winnipesaukee is humming this winter with 2 huge events. Last weekend the New England Pond Hockey Classic was held on Meredith Bay of Lake Winnipesaukee. This is the 4th year for this huge growing event, which is the brainchild of Scott Crowder-the hockey player turned entrepreneur. What a fabulous job Scott did this year in organizing over 1,400 hockey players and opening up 21 individual rinks on Meredith Bay in front of the Inn at Bay Point. What a huge attendance! People came up from everywhere to enjoy this true ?Currier and Ives? setting, going back to the old days of outdoor pond hockey and the invigorating feel of a true winter event. This year?s classic started on Friday morning and continued through Sunday. The organizers of the event had their hands full this year with the large amount of rain we received prior to the event. The event went off perfectly and the ice hardened beautifully in time for 200 teams to compete on Lake Winnipesaukee?s 21 rinks.

Many age divisions were sold out within hours of registration, which is a testimony to the type of event this has been growing into. Many of the hockey players from New England were attracted to the beautiful outdoor setting with the mountains in the background and Meredith Village as a focal point with its fine restaurants, inns, and warm village atmosphere. A number of welcome parties were thrown by some of the sponsors including LaBatt Blue and Bauer. Frank Roche commented, ?I?ve attended this fantastic event for the past 4 years and have seen it increase in size immensely. This is a wonderful, healthy, down-to-earth sporting event that brings a lot of people and interest into the Lakes Region during our slow winter months. I can see this event growing steadily like the Timberman Triathalon in Gilford, which has grown into a nationally acclaimed sporting competition. Everyone in the Lakes Region is very proud of what Scott Crowder and his organizational team has been able to accomplish in such a short time. All of us have benefited from this great event in the Lakes Region and it exposes so many people to the wonderful 4 seasons of recreation we have in the Lakes Region. Even after the event on Wednesday of this week I saw a group of young hockey players having a game out on one of the ice rinks. It creates a strong tradition for the Lakes Region and ties in with our 4 seasons of fun and recreation!?

Derby weekend is here?Thousands of ice fishermen will be flocking to Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith. The town of Meredith is host to one of the Lakes Region?s biggest winter events?the Great Rotary Fishing Derby presented by the Meredith Rotary Club. This event brings ice fishermen from around the country to Meredith and the surrounding towns for a weekend of fun, fishing, and taking in all of the special events during the weekend. Feb. 9th and 10th expect to see exciting crowds scattered around Lake Winnipesaukee. Couple this event with a projected blizzard snowstorm for Friday through Saturday afternoon and you have the ingredients for a historic event and storm! It should be an interesting weekend as the snow plows open up the roadways. You?ll see all sorts of vendors out on the lake selling their wares, coffee, food, and beverages. Snowmobilers will be cruising down to Meredith Bay from all parts of the lake to view this unique, one-of-a-kind event where the lake is literally filled with scattered bob houses of different colors? a really unique event to photograph. Tickets are $30 and are available at more than a dozen locations around Winnipesaukee including the Winnisquam Trading Post, the Alton Circle Grocery, Skellys Market, Paugus Bay Sporting Goods, and AJ?s Bait and Tackle. Ticket revenue goes to great prizes, donations to local organizations, and stocking of fish. This year?s prizes will all be in cash: first prize is $15,000, second prize is $5,000, and the third prize is $3,000. The volunteers who put on this great family event do a phenomenal job. A filming and a documentary was also completed on the Great Rotary Fishing Derby..The Movie!

Even if you?re not fishing in this year?s derby, bring the family, children, and grandchildren to derby headquarters at Rotary Park in Meredith. The children love it, seeing the big board with all of the catches of the day mounted, competing for the biggest prize. Stop by and support the many vendors out on the lake, grab a hot dog and some coffee, and socialize with all the natives. This is truly a one-of-a-kind winter event with a great New England atmosphere in one of the most scenic resort villages in America.

PayPal offers preview of much-needed site redesign, finally enters Web 2.0

PayPal offers preview of much needed site redesign

While PayPal's recently revamped homepage looks fresh and modern, the actual account interface is still mired in the past, seemingly unchanged since the early aughts when the company first hit it big alongside Ugg boots and American Idol. As the online payment giant seeks to reinvent itself however, it's finally bringing the site design into the future. PayPal has offered a sneak peek at the new look, and it's certainly more in line with current design tropes, with a cleaner and clearer aesthetic and improved navigation to boot. The refreshed design also hints at the company's upcoming retail efforts like in-store checkouts and purchasing grace periods where you can buy the item at the store, bring it home and then decide where the funds should come from. We're still not sure when the redesign will roll out, but we're guessing it'll be around when those Discover Network cards come into play. For more screenshots of the new PayPal, take the design tour at the source.
