My Latest Purchase From SHOP.CA
Now that SHOP.CA has finally launched (wasn?t the wait agonzing, talk about a tease!) what are you shopping for?
Last month I shared how? happy I was to find one of my favourite stroller brands, Britax, at SHOP.CA and how the free shipping and SHOP.CA Rewards beat competitors on this product.? I?ve also been tweeting and sharing on Facebook when there?s an awesome SHOP.CA sale that I think my readers should know about!? Back-to-School in particular brought Canadian shoppers a ton of great sales on clothing items.
In August, I was tasked (oh such a hard task!) with deciding what to purchase as my first actual product-review from SHOP.CA.
Do I get a leaf blower for my husband or a new outdoor toy for the kids? Both had great prices and of course came with SHOP.CA Rewards but in the end I decided it was time for something for ME.
Well, sort of.
The Cosmopolitan Medium Rectangular Storage Ottoman was my final choice!? One of my goals for the new school year is to reduce stressful mornings.? Now that I have 2 kids to get ready and out the door in the mornings (with a third on my hip!) I need to make our mornings as streamlined as possible.? One major? bone of contention between my kids and I is missing hats, gloves and shoes in the morning.? Where do they disappear to?
We have a large front entry way in our house but a very small closet.? This ottoman, with tons of storage space inside, is the perfect place for storing hats, gloves, scarves and other odds and ends that seem to go missing. My sister had advice for me too ? put baskets inside the ottoman to further organize the items!? Brilliant.
Now the kids have a storage place for their ?stuff?, a place to sit and put their shoes and boots on, and hopefully I have a calmer morning getting them all out the door.

India Supreme Court upholds death sentence for Mumbai attacker
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence for Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a group of militants who attacked the country's financial capital, Mumbai, in 2008 killing 166 people.
"The Supreme Court has today dismissed the appeal of Mohammad Kasab," Gopal Subramaniam, a lawyer for the prosecution, told reporters after the verdict.
Kasab, a Pakistani national who said he belonged to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, was found guilty on more than 80 charges in May 2010, including murder and waging war on India, and was sentenced to death by hanging.
He was filmed walking through Mumbai's main train station carrying an AK-47 and a knapsack on his back during an attack in which nearly 60 people were gunned down.
It was part of a series of coordinated strikes on key landmarks in the city, including luxury hotels and a Jewish centre.
The three-day rampage led to an increase in tension between India and its nuclear-armed neighbor Pakistan, causing a temporary suspension of peace talks.

More on the debunked Egyptian 'crucifixion' hoax (and its 2009 ...
Earlier this week, I debunked the story ? spreading like wildfire on WorldNetDaily and other Internet sites ? that Christians were being crucified by the Muslim Brotherhood in front of Egypt?s presidential palace. As I noted, the story was based on nothing more than a social-media rumor that had been posted for a few minutes on the Web site of Sky News Arabic, before an alert Sky editor deleted it. From that small seed of nonsense, it traveled far and wide, as such urban legends do in the Internet age.
In response to my debunking, WorldNetDaily published a new article purporting to ?confirm? the original crucifixion story. But the only relevant new evidence WND provides is a link to a video that purports to show the deleted text from the Sky web site. I have no reason to doubt that these photos are genuine. But as I made abundantly clear in my original article, I don?t dispute that Egypt?s hardcore Islamists are a nasty lot. My article was limited to debunking the crucifixion claim. And none of the photos provided show any hint of crucifixion.)
Over the last day or so, I have had an ongoing email correspondence with Michael Carl, the WND reporter who wrote the crucifixion article. He tells me he is sticking by his story. When I asked him if he has ?any information from any of the tens of thousands of people who would have seen an actual ?crucifixion? if one really did take place in front of the presidential palace,? he told me that he had. Tantalized, I pressed him for details. Alas, he refused to divulge any of the evidence to me ? or anyone else. If he did, he explained, the Muslim Brotherhood ?would kill my sources.? And so ended our correspondence.
More enlightening than my emails with Father Carl (he describes himself as a priest, as well as a reporter), was a note I got from a reader pointing out that this is not the first time that Islamists in the region have been falsely accused of crucifixions.
As Nathan J. Brown pointed out in early 2009, on the web site of the Carnegie Endowment, an internet rumor circulated in late 2008 to the effect that Hamas was ?celebrating? Christmas by crucifying Gaza?s non-Muslims. And amazingly, it wasn?t just the conspiracy theorists at WND who got sucked into this one. According to Brown, it was featured in blogs connected to such respectable publications as The New Republic, National Review and Commentary. Even the Simon Wiesenthal Center was pushing the story.
Here is the real story, as Brown describes it:
Some officials of the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Justice (answering to Hamas) have been drafting a new criminal code based on Islamic criminal law. They have not released its work (at least outside of Gaza), but they did hold a workshop to discuss a draft. A copy of this document fell into the hands of a reporter for the Arabic daily al-Hayat. While that newspaper is generally reliable enough, the reporter made a significant mistake: He thought the draft had been fully and finally passed by the parliament, not that it was the subject of a small group discussion. And he quoted from some passages in the law ? including the title of a section dealing with categories of punishment that mentioned crucifixion (a legal category in Islamic criminal law). There was no evidence that the law went beyond using the term as a legal category. And since the reporter did quote some fairly strong provisions in other areas it seems unlikely that he would have missed the opportunity to mention any actual provisions for crucifixion. The small (and mistaken) article in al-Hayat was picked up by the Jerusalem Post (it also circulated in some Arabic media outlets) which ? in perhaps the only glimmer of responsible journalism in this strange episode ? added that it could not confirm the report. But that qualification got lost. So did the explanation from Hamas legal officials that no law had been passed. One Israeli activist working hard to circulate the charge (Itamar Marcus) actually went so far as to cover up his mistake by claiming that the Hamas denial (which was actually quite accurate) was simply a ?lie? ? And so columnists (generally on the right side of the political spectrum) began to claim that Hamas had legislated crucifixion ? in the more lurid report ? for any ?unbelievers,? ?enemies of Islam,? or even Christians. And few could resist mentioning that the timing coincided with Christmas.
The people reporting this false story were not deliberately lying. As I noted in my original post, they have simply become so wrapped up in the idea that we are fighting an existential war against militant Islam, that they are willing to believe any nonsense story they come across without checking it. If it sounds like it could be true, then it must be.
The first casualty of war, as always, is truth.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Sitting in his coppersmith's shop in Psyrri, the main tourist shopping area of the Greek capital, Athens, Apostolos Liamiras takes stock of the depressed situation he and his country have found themselves in.
Business is down ? the high-spending customers that once flocked to the area have been replaced by backpackers on a tight budget. Greece, meanwhile, has lurched from crisis to crisis, dependent on billions in loans to survive.
As the country's Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, heads around Europe for top-level talks on Greece's attempts to right its finances, austerity-weary Greeks back home are preparing themselves for new pain amid fears that they may be kicked out of the 17-country group that uses the euro.
"It would have helped if we hadn't entered the euro," Liamiras says. "Leaving it won't do any good."
The multi-billion euro international loans that Greece has been relying on have come with tough conditions which have led to harsh cuts in government spending and benefits. The economy, left reeling by the austerity measures, has slumped into a four-year recession. And it looks as though there will be more pain to come.
If the debt inspectors overseeing Greece's loans decide that it has failed on key reforms, vital funds could be halted. This would push the country to default on its debts.
A bust Greece might well be forced to leave the euro and go back to its old currency, the drachma, to pay its way. Many Europe-watchers fear this could plunge its country into abject misery ? the new drachma would rapidly lose its value, inflation would vaporize savings and the price of basic goods would rocket.
Here are the views of four Athenians on the planned new cutbacks and on Greece's future in the euro. Their remarks have been edited for clarity.
Dina Bika, 44, runs a coffee-bar in the Psyrri tourist district of Athens and has seen a massive drop in business. She thinks Greece's days in the eurozone are numbered:
The new measures will just protract the time it takes for us to return to the drachma. I don't think they will work.
So it would be better to get to the inevitable ? it's like in America where you can spend 20 years in death row and then end up in the electric chair. Why wait 20 years, for a pardon? I don't think we'll get it.
(Leaving the euro) would teach us to function in a more responsible way, both as individuals and as a state.
(Greece's creditors) seem to be toying with us. When you have 10 children to save, you help the strongest ones and toss whichever is weakest off a cliff.
I think they will save those countries that they want to save, and we are just like a guinea pig that will die during the experiment.
People really aren't in the mood to react, most are focusing on how to make an extra euro a day just to survive.
Over the past six years, our business has dropped eighty percent. Most shop owners spend their time just waiting for a customer to come in.

I don't think there's any chance of our leaving the euro, that would make things very hard not just for Greece but for the rest of Europe too.
We are already suffering (from the crisis) and that's our own fault, not the Europeans', due to the policies we followed for ages.
I believe the series of austerity measures will continue. In any case I don't think they have been properly planned, with specific improvements in mind. They are passed out of necessity, because (the government is) obliged to do so.
But I don't think people will take to the streets right now. I'd give it at least another year.

The new measures will have great consequences and will create broader problems, mostly for us, the middle classes.
So far (people) have managed because they had some modest savings set aside, or by borrowing. But I don't think people will be able to meet the new demands.
Sooner or later they will take to the streets because we can't continuously bear the brunt of the financial crisis.
I think they will not be able to push us out (of the eurozone) easily, and that they will seek ways of extracting the last euros left in our pockets.

Yiannis Darmanis, 70, owns a second-hand shop in the Psyrri area. He says Greece's crisis is the worst he has experienced in his lifetime, but expects the country to stay in the euro ? unless a revolution breaks out:
And then there will be no turning back. What does somebody with nothing ? no food, no money to pay their bills ? have to lose?
The new measures seem to me inevitable. But I still hold out hope, because we Greeks have learned to hope and be patient.
As things haven't come to the point where the Europeans kick us out ... we Greeks will wait and see what happens with the new measures.
The evil is not just in Greece, it's spread throughout Europe, but they picked Greece ? which is just three percent of the eurozone ? as the sacrificial victim. You can handle three percent, but you can't handle the remaining 97 percent. They shouldn't think we are naive.
I spoke to a couple and the man said: "My wife has lost her job, I have lost my job, we have stopped our children's private tutoring and I am waiting for Greece to burn down so that I can make a living off its ashes."
God alone knows what is going to happen.

UN to report Iran adds nuclear centrifuges

The new image, taken on Aug. 15, shows what appears to be pink tent-like material draped over two buildings in an apparent attempt to hide sanitization or other activity there from satellite cameras.

The United Nations' nuclear inspection agency, the IAEA, is about to issue a report finding that Iran has made significant progress on installing hundreds of new uranium-enriching?centrifuges, a senior administration official told NBC News on Friday.?
The New York Times reported earlier that U.N. inspectors would issue a report indicating that Iran had recently installed upward of 1,000 new centrifuges. The article went on to say that, according to diplomats and experts, Tehran could be speeding up its production of nuclear fuel while talks with the United States and its allies had ground nearly to a halt.?
The senior U.S. official, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said most of the new equipment has been installed underground in Iran?s Qum nuclear facility.?

While declining to discuss specific details in the International Atomic Energy Agency report, the official said it will also deal with the fact that Iran is focusing on enriching nuclear fuel to the dangerous 20 percent level, capable of being used in nuclear bomb production. But the report will not conclude that Iran has made the political decision to build a bomb, the official said.?
In a related development on Friday, the Institute for Science and International Security released satellite imagery that it says shows?apparent cleanup activities at the Parchin site in Iran, which is suspected of being used for explosive experiments related to the development of nuclear weapons.
An accompanying ISIS report, written by?David Albright and Robert Avagyan, indicated that after "considerable sanitization and earth displacement activity" at the site earlier in the month, a photo taken on Aug. 15 shows several buildings at the site have now been wrapped "with scaffolding and tarpaulin, hiding any sanitization or other activity there from satellite cameras."
"Depending on how effective of a seal the tarp provides, the goal could be continue sanitizing the inside and outside of the building that is suspected to contain particles indicative of nuclear weapons development work," it said. "Alternatively tarps could provide a cover for the demolition of the buildings, or portions of them, while also containing the spread of potentially contaminated debris."
Iran has thus far refused to give IAEA inspectors access to the Parchin site.

But as Israel's Ambassador Michael Oren said last week on ?The Andrea Mitchell Report? on MSNBC and in a recent Wall Street Journal column, Israel does not agree with the U.S. on the timeline.? Israeli officials have argued that time is running out before Iran reaches the point of no return.
There is some ambiguity, however, about how much of Israel's warnings are saber rattling intended to frighten Iran.?

Aceves (2-8) gave up five runs and six hits in one inning, and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 15 games.
Ernesto Frieri (2-0) got the win after giving up a tying solo homer in the ninth to Cody Ross, his 19th of the season, and an RBI single in the 10th to Dustin Pedroia, who drove in five runs.
Frieri was charged with a blown save, but secured the win when he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the 4-hour, 34-minute game.
With the score tied at 12, Morales jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Aceves for his 16th homer - just over the low right field fence. Erick Aybar followed with a single, knocking out Aceves. Vernon Wells hit an RBI double off Craig Breslow for the final run.
The Angels, who were swept in four games by Tampa Bay before coming to Boston, remained five games behind the Rays and closed to within 3 1-2 of Baltimore in the race for the AL's two wild-card spots.
The Red Sox took an 11-9 lead in the
eighth on RBI singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia, but the Angels rallied in the ninth and regained the lead with Wells' eighth homer and two-out, run-scoring singles by Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo.Angels starter C.J. Wilson, 0-5 in his last 11 starts, struggled again.
The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Pedroia and an RBI single by Gonzalez.
They made it 6-0 in the second on run-scoring singles by Scott Podsednik and Ellsbury and Pedroia's 11th homer, a three-run shot.
But Franklin Morales couldn't hold the lead, giving up six of the Angels' eight third-inning runs. Los Angeles had six hits, three walks and an error in the inning. Chris Iannetta and Hunter had two hits each, and every member of the Angels lineup except Trumbo got on base in the inning.
Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Kendrys Morales and Wells. Seven consecutive batters reached base after two were out.
Wilson then settled down and retired eight straight batters before Pedroia reached on an error by third baseman Alberto Callaspo in the fifth and scored on a single by Ross.
Boston went ahead 9-8 with two runs in the sixth on Mike Aviles' 12th homer and consecutive doubles by Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury. But Los Angeles tied it in the seventh on Trout's RBI single.
