iPad Mini vs. Nexus 7 - News - Know Your Cell

Apple's just launched iPad mini is about to compete with Google's Nexus 7, and the differences between the two are pretty major. We break it down here to see just how well the two tablets stack up.?

Screen size?

While they're pitted as direct competitors, the size difference between Apple's iPad mini and Google's Nexus 7 may be the single biggest deciding factor for some. At 7.9 inches, the iPad mini offers quite a bit more surface area than its 7-inch rivals, which also include Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.

That said, if you're hung up on screen size and you want the most compact option, Google Nexus 7 is it. But if you want a little more room for streaming and browsing, you'll get roughly 35 percent more of it with the iPad mini. The mini is also extremely light at 0.68 pounds (53 percent lighter than its full-size counterpart) and it's nearly paper thin (7.2 millimeters). It actually weighs less than the Nexus 7, which rings in at 0.75 pounds.

Software

Google's Nexus 7 runs on Android's latest Jelly Bean operating system (otherwise known as Android 4.1). It's noticeably faster and all-around smoother than its predecessors. In terms of response, Google's Nexus 7 already stacks up quite well with Apple's current iPad.?

Android 4.1 also offers newer features, like an expanded notification bar, which makes it a cinch to access your latest alerts. The expanded view allows you to view the first few lines of your most recent messages, so you can quickly see how important they are (or aren't).?

As for Apple's new iPad Mini, that'll ship with iOS?6. While we could get into an entire laundry list of perks to Apple's own homegrown operating system, let's just talk about your endless app options. The App Store currently boasts some 700,000 apps for iOS devices. That's a friggin' ton to pick from.?iOS is also super user-friendly, which we think is the biggest draw here. On the other hand, Android offers more room for customization if you're willing to tinker with it a bit. ?

Appearance?

This one is pretty basic. If you're going to keep your tablet in a durable case (as you should), you might not be too concerned about it. The Nexus 7 is constructed of plastic, while its competitor sports a snazzier, anodized aluminum body (just like the iPhone 5). Apple devices are also pretty noticeably Apple when they're not wrapped up in a case (and often times even when they are), so if you're big on labels, that's a small consideration to make.?

Bottom Line

If you're looking for the cheapest possible option between the two, it's (not surprisingly) the Nexus 7. You can score one of these for just $199 -- and with the holiday season just around the corner, Google could even consider slashing its already low price. The iPad mini starts significantly higher at $329 for 16GB Wi-Fi only.
