Alviro Petersen wants his batsmen to improve ? Cricket News Update
Having qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 2012, Alviro Petersen, the Highveld Lions? skipper, is delighted with his side?s performance but understands that there is a room for improvement in the batting department.
After winning the toss, Petersen opted to bowl first on a flat batting track, which was offering some bounce to the fast bowlers. Yorkshire were off to a solid start through their openers, Andrew Gale and Phil Jacques, who put on 54 runs for the first-wicket partnership.
However, their middle-order batsman failed to live up to the expectations, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Consequently, the English county could only manage to post 131 runs on the board in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets.
The Lions were also not very convincing with the bat and kept losing momentum throughout the innings; however, they were successful in crossing the line in the very last over of the match, with five wickets to spare.
Petersen is happy with his bowlers, especially Sohail Tanvir and Aaron Phangiso, but understands that his team will have to be more responsible with the bat, if they have any chance of succeeding in the knockout stage of the tournament.
?"I thought the bowling was excellent, the batting, I thought we could do more,? said the South African Test opener.
On the other side of the coin, Gale, the Yorkshire captain, is disappointed with the county?s effort in the glamorous event but admitted that the team?s chances were hampered by the absence of some of the senior players, especially Jonny Bairstow.
"I thought we were 20 runs light at the halfway stage, but we bowled well and took it to the final over,? he expressed. ?We are missing some of our main players from the domestic competition, but it has been a great experience for our guys."
Jean Symes, for his little cameo at the end (27 off 22) was named as the Player of the Match.
"It was a bit of a challenge coming in and not being able to hit off the middle straight up. I would like to hit it a little bit cleaner and get a faster start," the middle-order batsman mentioned during the post-match presentation ceremony.
